Of all the communities in Co
lumbia county, Rainier evidently
suffered the greatest from the
tremors last Wednesday, judging
by reports received from there.-
The worst hit in this community
perhaps was the grade school
building. Stucco there had been
cracked some near the north door
and in two places those cracks
opened up wide enough to look
through from the inside and see
outdoors all the way from the
first floor to the second story.
Plaster fell off in many places
and cracks in several other places
were found. Being so close to
noon the children of th" three
lower grades had been dismissed
and they were out playin.'. Most
of the others were in the lunch
room. There was crowding and
panic when it struck, but some of
the faculty members ordered them
to march out fast and orderly,
and they got out without any
trouble. Two weYe reported to
have bruises and scratches from
pushing, but nothing serious.
Dishes in the lunch room and
things in various rooms began
falling. A piano on the second
floor of the building tipped over
backwards on the floor.
The school was closed immed-
iately and
after examination
Thursday by state inspector both
the Rainier school and the Fern
hill school were condemned.
The stucco addition of the grade
school building can not be used
at all. Classes can be held in the
(Note: A word picture of the
earthquake last week as it affected
Mist was written afterwards by
Mrs. Austin Dowling, news writer
for The Eagle from that com
munity. Her account follows.)
“How the quake effected people
in our community. Writing from
our own personal feelings, we were
preparing lunch when a sound like
a very heavy shaking of trees
and a big wind coming up, ac
companied by a low rumble, was
heard.
About that time glass
began to rattle, dishes tumbled
over and everything in general
commenced to sway.
“The house even seemed
sway
and the brick chimney hung in
the balance. We began to get
very dizzy and taking our daugh
ter by the hand, tfe staggered
to the door and fled for the open.
Even then it never came to us
it was an earthquake until some
one said “quake”. As we looked
toward the house the brick flu
rocked to and fro.
•
“Damage done in our community
included toppling of chimneys from
several houses, the store had many
cans knocked from the shelves,
vinegar bottles and jugs were
broken and the goods were gen
et ally shaken up.
Others had
there fire places destroyed.
“We just remember, when we
were a small girl away back
in N. H., quite a heavy earthquake.
Don’t rememebr if it was as bad
as the one last week.”

wooden structure. It means that
other places must be found for
pupils in the Tirst three grades.
Churches and lodges have been
contacted to try to find space
for these grades.
The high school was not damag
ed to any extent. There are a
few cracks in plaster, but early
inspection revealed nothing ser
ious. The Fern Hill schoolhouse
lost its chimney. The janitor was
there. He immediately put out
the fire in the furnace.
Damage to hilliness buildings
was also reported as considerable.
The front of the building housing
the State Bank of Rainier bulged
outward and necessitated exten
sive repair work. Quite a bit of
breakage of articles falling from
shelves was also indicated.
