Sunday will mark the opening of the 1949 Bush spring handicap tournament at the Country club, Lloyd Quinn, club president, saki this week. Pairings for the start of the event were drawn up re cently by the tournament commit tee and are being published below again this week for the informa tion of golfers who may have for gotten their matches. Bush Headed by Kent Bauersfeld, the defending champion, members of the Vernonia Golf and Country club are set to start swinging in pursuit of the spring handicap championship. Starting this coming Sunday and continuing for the next five weeks, the tournament stacks up as one of the most hotly contested since the end of the war. Unlike the fall tourney that decides the club champion—the winner of which can generally be pre-determined from the clubs three or four top golfers, the spring handicap is a wide open affair, It gives each golfer a handicap scoring according to his ability, By thus making every player a potential winner it pro- vides a competitive atmosphere that probably exceeds any other type of match play. Players will be allowed a seven- day period to play off each match. If the contestants fail to play their match within this allocated time, one or both will forfeit his chance at the championship. Club rules will govern all play. With several new members join ing the club and starting to play golf for the first time, we believe it a good idea to acquaint them with some of the terminology of the golfing world. The average golfer will find of course that he will originate many terms of his own to fit various' situations. However, the follow, ing are the most commonly used and have the added advantage in that they may be used in mixed company. Birdie: What you get from the guy you are playing with when he goes one under par on a hole. Eagle: A big bird. Dub: Any shot of less than 250 yards made by your opponent. Whiff: A clean miss accompa nied by loud swearing and the shout “practice”. Out of bonds: Same as it was in the service. The best place to play but they won’t let you play there. Hazard: A left handed golfer. Short Putts: Wally Noakes, currently assist ing Dave Howard with the course, helped construct the LaGrande course in 1926 and was a greens- keeper at the Glendover course in Portland for 6 years. Bud Bush is putting up such a swell trophy for the handicap tourney that he must be planning on winning it himself. Low score of the week was Paul Dyers’ 38. Outstanding shot of the week was Edison Aldrich's tee shot which put a permanent wave in the handle of Johnny Roedigers’ hag boy. Best idea of the week is Jimmy Davies' home driving range. This is an intricate arrangement and must be seen to be appreciated. Golfers having trouble with their wood game should contact Mr. Davies for information on its con struction and operation.
