4 THURSDAY, JAN. 20, 1949 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON TROUBLE ON THE HILL... There is always something hap pening -on this hill and usually, bad but this last was a near di saster. During these cold nights when the thermometer has been flirting with zero, Ma has been heating a couple of bricks in the oven, wrapping them in the tail of an- old flannel shirt and putting them in the bed. They warm up the bed wonderfully and are boon companions for cold feet. Sunday night was an especially cold night and Ma, after she had put the hot bricks in the bed, turned on the electric pad for extra warmth then came out to the kitchen where we always lis tened to the ten o’clock news. After hearing Jim Wiatt and his five star final we started for bed, but we could not get the bedroom door open; something had gone haywire with the lock. We twist ed the knob and pulled and tugged in vain. I suggested we sleep in the spare bedroom but all the covering there was on that bed was a grand, hand crocheted bed spread that Ma keeps on there to impress visitors. Besides Ma left the electric pad on and it was liable to set fire to the bed and burn the whole place down; we just had to get in that bedroom and the only way was through a window. I waded through the snow to the window but it was frozen tight. With the aid of a hammer and chisel, much pounding and tugging I finally got it open but if the Recording Angel was on the job I much fear his report. I crawled through the window, in r • T r— Chevrolet*s ‘ Balanced Design California Trip Ended; Sympathy Extended ft Adds Beauty and Comfort cidently knocking over a stgnd table covered with toilet articles and cold creams, but I was very (unhappy; my feet were cold, my house slippers were filled with snow and my finers were stiff and numb with cold. I couldn’t get the door open from the inside either, neither could I take off the lock as it was one of those kind that is set inside the door. I decided to take the bolts out of the door hinges and get it open that way but I had to have a screw driver. I did not like the idea of crawling out the window into the snow again so talked Ma into bringing one to the window for me. She also got her slippers full of snow and the fact that she did not have any stockings on did not help her already vexed disposition Progressive streamlining of the 1949 Chevrolet is in I liner.
