Court Extends
Time of Lease
The county court Wednesday af
ternoon last week granted the
Ruth Realty company an exten
sion of 23 months on its lease of
the 27 acre industrial site at the
north limits of Columbia City. The
company gave the court a check
for $2,000 for the term, which will
expire December 1, 1950.
This is the site which is popular
ly believed to be held by the realty
company for the American Smelt
ing and Refining corporatoin, and
according to the terms of the ex
piring agreement or lease, the
company agreed to begin improve
ment of the site before January 1,
1949, or surrender the property to
the county.
According to the realty company
spokesmen, who negotiated the ex
tension, the company found it im
possible to build at the present
time because present labor and ma
terial costs would force them to
exceed the amount budgeted for
construction by approximately 40
per cent, and made construction at

this time prohibitive.
The same terms contained in the
original agreement obtain in the
extension, except that the company
agrees to begin construction before
December 1, 1950, or forfeit the
site.
The county court was asked if
it had information as to the iden
tity of the company for whom the
Ruth Realty company is acting as
agent, and the reply was that in
all the negotiations there never
had been any information shed on
this point. The members of the
court claim they are guessing, just
as are all others.
That the concern for whom the
realty company' is negotiating
regards the Columbia City site
highly was made evident when it
was learned a free site had been
offered at Warrenton but was not
accepted. The same source stated
the site was regarded as the best
on the Columbia river.
