Gas Sales Top Last Year Despite the west coast oil work ers’ strike and difficulties of maintaining petroleum supplies, September gasoline sales in Ore gon closed with a greater in crease over last year than any month to date, Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry has reported. The September figure of 48,173,- 451 gallons was less than a million gallons under August’s record to tal. It topped September, 1947 by more than six million gallons for a 15 per cent gain, compared to an average 10 per cent for other months. Fuel taxes grossed »2.408,672.54, of which approximately 13 per cent will be returned to non-high- way users, Newbry reported. Gas oline sales in the first nine months have pawed 357 million gallons with tax collections aggregating $17.859,094.73, the secretary said. He pointed out that Septembei AFFORD TREATMENT ELSEWHERE also set the year’s high in traf fic deaths, „ith forty-eight per sons losing their lives in smash- ups. Estimating Oregon motor ists had rolled up more than four billion miles of driving by Sept ember 30, he reminded drivers of the necessity for matching speed to weather and traffic conditions
