Anderson will spon­ sor the group and lead the re­ creation for the party. “Shhool Daze” Party All high school young people of the community are cordially invited to attend the ‘‘Back to School Daze” social time being sponsored by the First Christian church on Sunday evening, Sept­ ember 12, from 6 to 7:30 in the social parlor of the church. Games and refreshments will make up the program and at the close a meeting will be held to organize a Christian Youth Fel­ lowship to meet regularly from this time on. The program offered in these meetings will consist of games and recreation, projects, singing and Christian education. Rev. G. Wm. Anderson will sponsor this group and act as school teacher for this party. Junior Group All 6th and 6th graders in the community and church will meet each Wednesday afternoon in the Christian church beginning Sept­ ember 8th at 4:00 p.m. Games will be played, refreshments serv­ ed and the group organized. The first project of this group will be the construction of 25th an­ niversary banks for the church. Mudsic and Madness Social All 7th and 8th grade pupils are inivited to attend a big Music and Madness social time to be held at the Christian church on September 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. At the close of games and re­ freshments, a meeting will be held to organize an intermediate Chi Rho Youth Fellowship which will meet regularly from then on. The program will consist of recreation, projects and Christian worship. “Christianity and Communism” The Men’s 90 and 9 group of the First Christian charch will meet Friday evening at the church for their regularly monthly meet­ ing. Rev. G. Wm. Anderson will lead a discussion group on the subject of “Christianity and Com­ munism”. Refreshments will be served and a short business ses­ sion held. All men of the church and community are cordially in­ vited to be present. Business Meeting Held The regular monthly business meeting of the Christian church met for dinner last Wednesday evening. Reports were presented by committees including the Evan­ gelistic committee. Couple United at Church Rite Saturday In a setting of pink and white gladioli and pink rosebuds, Juan­ ita Frances Weidman and James Q. Davis were married at a candle­ light ceremony in the Evangelical United Brethren church Saturday evening, September 4 with Rev. Allen H. Backer officiating. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Quenton D. Davis of Ver­ nonia. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Weidman was given in marriage by her father. She wore a navy blue tailored suit with bridal accessories and carried a corsage of baby orchids and stephanotis on a white Bible. At­ tending her sister was Vona Weidman, who wqye a grey suit complimented with rose and black accessories. Her corsage was of pink tea roses. Don McDowell of Portland was best man. Both he and the groom wore dark business suits. Usher- ing were Loren Weidman, brother of the bride and Elgus Frank. Preceding the marriage vows Charlotte Davis, sister of the groom lighted the tapers and Mrs. Carroll Chance of Sweet Home sang the wedding song “Because.” Mrs. Elgus Frank was pianist. A reception followed in the beautifully decorated church par­ lors. Mrs. Henry John ,and Mrs. Allen Backer served the bride’s cake; pouring and assisting were the Misses Lila Schram and Mickey Hall, and the Mesdames Geneva Killingburg, Rose Potter and Lesta Garner. The groom’s sister, Helen Davis, had charge of the guest book, and Mrs. Mar­ garet Hartzell and Mrs. E.J. Doug­ lass presided at the gift table. Following a short wedding trip to Portland and local points of interest, Mr. and Mrs. Davis will be at home in Vernonia. New American Legion Officers Installed Cleo Walrath will head American Legion activities for the coming year as the result of his election recently to that position and the installation ceremony conducted a few days ago. John Salvatore, commander of area 1, was installing officer and he was assisted by Woody Hite, vice-commander of district 1. The installing team, headed by Paul Doyle as captain, of the Washing­ ton and Columbia Voiture, 40 et 8, was included in the work. Other officers who serve this year are Floyd Otis, vice-com­ mander; Harry Culbertson, adju­ tant; Bill Wilson, finance officer; Albert Tandy, chaplain; Robert McNair, sergeant-at-arms; Bill Nichols, historian and Bill J. Horn, service officer. • Jepson-Thompson Rites Read Sunday Afternoon On Sunday, the fifth of Sept­ ember at 3 p.m., Miss Betty Ann Jepson of Birkenfeld became the bride of Richard Thompson. The election of officers was held after lunch and also the members exchanged birthday gifts and drew names for the coming year. Mrs. Carmichael was elected to the presidency position, Mrs. Wood as vice-president and Mrs. Millis as secretary-treasurer. Four guests and 12 members were present. The next meeting will be held September 16 when Mrs. Chalmers will be the hostess. • A wedding ceremony was per- formed on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bateson, Mist, uniting their daughter, Agnes Larson in marriage to Forest Lester Blount of Ver- nonia Saturday, September 4. Rev. Allen H. Backer conducted the ceremony. The bride was attired in a light gray suit and was attended by Miss Odean Blount, sister of the groom as bridesmaid. Six Given Initiatory Degree by Lodge On Tuesday night of this week a class of six candidates werx given the initiatory degree by the Odd Fellows lodge. They were: Thomas Galloway, E. W. French, Robert R. Roeser, Cloice L. Hall, Hulan A. Thacker and Thomas F. Tomlin. The degree work was conducted very well.
