8 THURSDAŸ, MAY 20, 1948 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. Letter Draws Answer (Continued from page 7) true American with the interests of all as your sole aim. Now I think you want the best candidate to represent the Re publican party in the fall elections just as much as I do. You and I seem to be on opposing sides, but perhaps that needn't have to be. You or someone else, but certainly with your permission, said that in the Dewey for Presi dent ads sponsored by the veterans that most of the undersigned had stated they had not been approach ed by the Republican committ“e for the use of their names. -Now that like a lot of stuff sounds pretty good when first looked at, but like a lot of stuff it can be misconstrued. Now in all my read ing of the paper in the last few weeks I haven’t seen one single report made public that' Dewey and his managers had been found in error in any of the things they used in their advertisements. Now I believe that when a’ state ment like that, with its corres ponding serious charge should be fully aired. And I think you as one of the collaboraters to such a line of thought should present these facts to the public at large and in their entireity so that we all may see whether you and your associates or Mr. Dewey and his associates are wrong. I firmly believe that the one found in error should give a public apology. Don’t you think it strange that such a fact would not be uncovered until after the Dewey - Stassen debate ? 1 believe that in every man who runs for public office there should be a good deal of humility and a large proportion of honestv. This is my side of the argument; digest it or throw it away. I don’t care . . its your conscience. Sincerely, TOD BLAKE in the open where it can be seen; Mr. Stassen declares that we should just ban it from society and hunt it down but. leave it with the weapons by which it could fight back. With which snake would you feel most safe? I compliment you if you have gone this far. It shows that you aren’t so bigot ed that you can’t take a little criticism. And if he isn’t honest, he certainly can not be truly humble. If I don’t see you spearheading the drive to uncover the actual facts on this veteran thing, I must be forced to cons'der that you regard yourself as being wrong. Now in regard to the main de bate issue of last night - com munism. If the sponsor of the bill, if the committee that worked on the bill can call it an act which does not outlaw the com munist party, how can you and Mr. Stassen claim that he did not surrender his position on this vital issue ? Stassen in his rebuttal mentioned repeatedly that if Dew ey would agree to support the Mundt-Nixon bill he would agree t at they had reached an agree ment on th’s question. Mr. Dewey in his rebuttal said in effect that if th" bill was constitutional, swell, thus implying if not actually stating that he did not support The ‘NEW LOOK’ for vfavorite garment it. Yet an hour and a half later a Stassen supporter, supposedly speaking with Stassen’s permis sion declared that the former Min nesota governor had claimed vic tory rather than defeat. A portion of the bill was read at your round table discussion which was claimed made the bill an act which would outlaw the party. Actually it d d not go be yond the limit of reason which is ... to deaden, to operate on the poisonus fangs of this animal creed without killing the animal its If. In effect what the Mundt- Nixon bill will attempt to do is remove the poison sacks from a snake but let the snake live. I don’t like a snake, but I’d rather see it Out in the open and know that its instruments of pain have b°»n removed than to know that lurking in the dark underbrush, I know not where, was a snake that had war declared on it by every conceivable method but still re tained the poison that could kill me. That was and still is the fund amental difference between the stand of Governor Dewey and that of Stassen. Dewey declares re move the poison but leave it out SUITS A vailable No w!
