Registration of
Vehicles Up
Oregon motor vehicle registra
tion for the first quarter of 1948
is up 12 per cent over the same
period last year, Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry has re
ported.

CONGRESS
All registered vehicles totalled
512,224 to surpass the 457,525 re
corded in the first three months of
1947. Passenger cars accounted
for 397,094 of the total, an in
crease of nearly 40,000 and ap
proaching the entire 1947 passen
ger registration of 407,186.
Registration fees were $2,851,-
067.55, a decline of nearly $1,-
000,000 for the period despite the
increase in vehicles. This is ex
plained by the new commercial
vehicle law which reduces.license
fees but imposes a highway use
tax on operators, the secretary
pointed out.
The drivers’ license division re
ported 17,009 original license and
68,228 renewals. All motor ve
hicles and drivers’ transactions
produced an aggregate of $3,172,-
877.61 in fees for the period.
The- system of renewing old
drivers’ licenses progressivly by
serial numbers is working well
except for the few who are un
aware of the plan and find them
selves with invalid licenses, New
bry declared. The program is
nearing the halfway mark in re
placement of the old licenses,
after which all will expire every
other year on the holder’s birth
date. Driver’s licenses with serial
numbers up to 5R396.000 will have
expired by the end of May. Com
plete renewal schedules may be
obtained from examiners, police
departments, and many service
stations.

Would you suspect that the colorful smartness of modem wallpapers
begins in the forest? It does! Practically all of our fine decorative
papers are made from woodpulp. Those new patterns you haw been
admiring were once growing trees.
Wallpaper has long been an essential material for the American
home. And because trees grow, future generations are assured the wall
paper for their someday dream houses.
America’s forests are growing faster today than ever before in history.
. ¡This means adequate supplies of trees for all that wood provides. But
the forests need your help. Fire is their greatest enemy. Do your share
to keep fires out of the woods. HELP KEEP AMERICA GREEN!

JOHN PEYTON, R, candidate for
nomination for governor, is bas
ing his campaign upon the belief
that the holder of any public
office should use his entire efforts
for the promotion and advance
ment of those things which will
benefit the greatest number of
people. He also favors greater
effort to eliminate subversive
elements, better housing for veter
ans, advancement of flood control
and construction of new highways
ar.d market roads. Peyton stands
as opposed to a general retail
sales tax and the increase of the
gas tax or the doubling of license
fees.
