LET’S BE SOCIABLE Friends Entertained At Birthday Party V.F.W. Auxiliary Initiates 4 Candidates Pauline Ann King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. King, enter tained a group of young friends at a birthday party Saturday, February 28. Refreshments of birthday cake, jello, ice cream and cocoa were served to those pres- ent who were: Mary Kay, Janet and Marilyn Paulson, Violet and Pat Brissett, Larry, Joyce ana Nancy Lee Akers, Donna Yaunkee and the hostess’ two sisters, Ber- nadine and Pat King. Many gifts and cards were re ceived. A very interesting and instruc tive meeting was held at the I.O.O.F. hall March 3 by the V. F. W. Auxiliary. New business was brought be- fore the assembly and some old business was passed. It was voted to send cigarettes, candy and $5 cash each month to the Roseburg hospital for disabled veterans. Also to set aside 10 per cent of the proceeds of bingo games to be given in the future as a benefit fund for the hospital. Nomination of officers for the coming year was in order and left open pending the next meet ing. During the meeting, four new candidates were initiated. They were: Jean Stearns, Mary Wiese, Betty Crawford and Betty Hawken. This brings the year's total of new members to 42. A delicious lunch of pie a-la- mode was served after the meet ing by Pauline King, Peggy Good- manson and Imogene Hartman. President Eva Poynter made a beautiful birthday cake honoring all members whose birthdays oc curred after January 1. Mrs. Bernice Knoedler was chosen to finish the year as pres- ident of the society when Mrs. Vivian Whittington resigned to return to her former home in Boise, Idaho. The Missionary society will sponsor the pre-Easter prayer meeting on Wednesday evening, March 24 at 7:30 at the church. The annual communion service will be held at the church on Thursday evening, March 25 at 7:30. The 90 and 9 men of the Christ ian church will hold their regu lar monthly business meeting and social in the church parlors on Friday evening, March 12, at 7:30. All men are invited to come and bring a friend. - Wedding Solemnized at Springfield Church Lois McDonald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walt McDonald, sister to Celeste Poetter and Ronald and Charles McDonald, was married at the Methodist church in Springfield Saturday, February 21, to Julius Hydrik from Idaho. Attending the wedding from Ver nonia were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poetter, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald McDonald and son, Lannie, and Charles McDonald. Mrs. Culbertson Is Hostess to Study Group Mrs. Harry Culbertson was hostess to the Vernonia Study club on March 4. Members responded to roll call by giving a few pertinent facts about a famous man. .Mrs. A. J. Hughes gave a re view of the book, “Man: An Auto biography,” during the program hour. George Stewart, the author, is professor of English at the University of California at Berke ley. He wrote this stimulating autobiography because he was thoroughly tired of so-called his tories of man of the last 3,000 years because what man had ac complished previously was much more notable. Mrs. Hughes presented a most fascinating account of the devel opment of man in this early era. During the social hour that fol lowed, the group enjoyed refresh ments served by the hostess. • Approximately five million child ren in the United States school buses daily. Extension Unit Names New Officials The Vernonia unit of home demonstration met in the I.O.O.F. hall Thursday, March 4. Mrs. Maud Casswell, home demonstra tion agent, of St. Helens was present to give the demonstration of how to use pressure sauce pans for safety and rapidity and how to be conservative of vitamins in food. A plum pudding was baked, vegetables and meat were cooked and tasted by the 22 ladies present. Election of officers was held, the retiring officers being: chairman, Wilma Borton and secretary, Mrs. G. C. Kirkbride. New officers voted in were: chairman, Viola Eckland; vice chairman, Gertrude Rusow , and secretary, Mrs. Reta Lamping. A change in the meeting place was discussed and the next meeting will be on the construction of foot stools and will be held the first Thursday in April. THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. Owing to sickness, only five members were present, but a lovely time was had by all able to attend. Those attending were: Mrs. George Miller, Mrs. Ella Woods, Mrs. Louis Carmich ael, Mrs. Floeter and baby and Mrs. Millis. The club will hold its next meet ing at the home of Mrs. Marion Steers.
