2 THURSDAY, FEB. 26, 1948 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON TOPICS OF THE TOWN Mrs. Gertude Hanson and her daughters, Sharon and Hallie, of Svensen Island were up to see Mrs. Hanson’s cousin, Mrs. Wilma Borton, Thursday the 19th. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pitts and Mrs. Charles Green, all of Port land, parents and sister of Arnold Wayne Pitts 1155 Umatilla Ave., -were here to call on the Pitts family Monday the 23rd. On Tuesday, February 17, E. F. Chambliss, owner of the 2nd St. shoe repair shop left for Modesto, California on a business trip. He returned home Friday the 20th. Sponsored by the Am erican Legion Auxiliary. 8t2c Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hanson and Jimmie from Naselle, Washington, visited Sunday with Mrs. Hanson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis, later taking with them Mr. ana Mrs. Ellis to visit Mr. and Mjs, Oscar Kaphammer and family. They enjoyed a birthday dinner given in honor of Mrs. Hanson. Also present were: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kaphammer, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Kaphammer from Idaho Falls, Idaho, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kapham mer of Troutdale, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ellis and daughters of Lake Grove and Mrs. Mae Coff man of Seattle. All these people were former residents of Vernonia several years ago with the excep tion of Mrs. Coffman who is an aunt of Mrs. Kaphammer and Mrs. Hanson. Mr. and Mrs. Chet Alexander entertained with a dinner in honor of her mother, Mrs. I. E. Knowles February 14. Sundland. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bridger» spent Saturday evening at the Chas. Sundland home in Mist. The S. P. & S. depot agent, A. H. Landers, has been ill with the flu for three weeks. He is re cuperating and is able to be up and around a little. Alfred Jones took sick at the mill while working three weeks ago and has been confined in the Physicians and Surgeons hospital in Portland for two weeks. His condition is slowly improving. Miss Joyce Jones celebrated her 12th birthday at her home Tues day, February 17. Those attend ing were: Alice Steers, Pete Nor ris, Wayne Thomas, Stella Wool sey, Lois Gore, Ronald Leonard, Donald Schaeffer, Buddy Herra, Robert Kimball, Nancy Bergerson, Joyce Baker, Janet Smith and the hostess, Mrs. Alfred Jones and her sister. •Mrs. Anna Partridge called on friends along Weed Ave. last week. Sponsored by the Am erican Legion Auxiliary. 8t2c Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lange went to Portland Saturday to visit his mother who has been ill with the flu. On Sunday they went to Brownsville where his uncle, J. P. Foley, passed away on February 12. Services were held Monday in Cottage Grove. They visited with Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Steven son in Springfield and Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Crow in Eugene while being gone. They returned home Wednesday evening. Mrs. H. D. Thoreau and son ar rived here Sunday from Los Angeles, California. She plans to spend three weeks here visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Connie Anderson. Sam Wilson recently returned from California where he spent most of the past winter. Miss Josephine Hanel was taken to the Portland General hospital, Portland, last Thursday and un derwent an appendicitus operation Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Brunsman left Thursday noon of last week on a buying trip that took them to San Francisco. While there they will also visit Mr. and Mrs. Frank O’Rourke, parents of Mrs. Dave Brunsman. They may also go to Arizona before returning in from two to three weeks. Mrs. Mike Anderson and new daughter returned home last Thursday from the Forest Grove hospital. H. G. Wilson of Mist was taken to the Physicians and Surgeons hospital, Portland, Sunday night in the Bush ambulance. He was suffering from pneumonia. A. D. Lolley, police marshal, was taken to St. Vincents hospital, Portland, Monday for observation. People who have taken guns to Mr. Lolley for repairs are asked to wait until his return before calling for them. Glen A. Mitchell, Riverview res ident was taken to St. Vincents hospital, Portland, Wednesday of last week. He was scheduled for an operation on his leg. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vanderzanden surprised their daughter, Mrs. B. J. Meiwes Sunday with a dinner in her honor. Also celebrating a birthday and spending the day was Martin Vanderzanden, an uncle of Mrs. B. Miwes and bro ther of Joe, and Lin Vanderzanden. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Meiwes and daughter, Mar garet, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Van derzanden of Forest Grove, Bill Meiwes, Mrs. Mary Spiering of Hillsboro who came up Friday to spent the week end, and Lin Van derzanden. Miller’s Vernonia DEPARTMENT Mrs. Alice Malmsten left last Thursday for El Segundo, Calif ornia after receiving word that her son, Paul, was seriously ill. Word was received here Tuesday from Mrs. Malmsten that he had passed away, but no information was available at that time as to funeral arrangements. Martin, who passed away Saturday of last week. The services were held in Portland. Going with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Garner and Mrs. Olive Powell. Guests of the Walter Mathews and Ralph Condits of Mist Sun day were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Burke of Seattle, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Buchanan and sons of Port land, and Mrs. Kyle Clark and two children of Hillsboro. Walter Mathews and Ralph Con- dit attended the Northern Whole sale Hardware convention in Port land Monday. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Malmsten, F. C. Griffin and Mrs. Malmsten’s brother, John Anderson, from Min nesota spent Monday here visiting friends and relatives and also making a tour of the O-A mill. The Malmstens are now living at Cedar Hills.
