Veterans Use Loans
Nearly half of the veterans who
obtain G. I. farm loans are en
gaging in specialized farming op
erations, according to a survey
of guaranteed loan transactions
made by the veterans administra
tion.
A study of farm loans closed
over the four-month period shows
20 per cent of these veteran
farmers engaged in producing
grain, cotton, fruits or vegetables;
19 per cent, in dairy products; 7
per cent, in livestock: and 2 per
cent in poultry. The remaining
52 per cent were operating gen
eral farms with widely diversified
products.
Nearly 40,000 veterans of world
war II had received VA guaran
teed loans by the end of 1947, and
new applications for such loans
during recent months have aver
aged about 1400 monthly.
Total value of farm loans ap
proved approaches $154,000,000, on
which the VA’s liability because
of guaranty or insurance is nearly
$71,000,000.

MINNEAPOLIS — The race be
tween increasing personal incomes
and advancing prices is continuing,
with income slightly ahead, the
monthly Investors Syndicate sur
vey of “real income” reveals. The
"real income” index is $1.03 com
pared with $1.00 a year ago, the
.■ urvey shows. "Real income” is
the relationship between revenue
and living costs.
The increase must be judged in
relation to conditions a year ago,
Investors
Syndicate cautioned.
Then sharp price increases had out
run personal incomes, so the “real
income" index was down. The pres
ent index reflects a closer balance
more than it does an actual gain.
Miscellaneous costs continue to
increase faster than food, clothing
or shelter, the survey discloses. In
dications are that any break in the
price spiral is likely to start with
clothing prices, Investors Syndi
cate observed.

Students Study Abroad
The number of world war II
veterans studying abroad under
the G. I. bill has increased almost
350 per cent during the past year.
At the beginning of the current
year, 6055 ex-servicemen and wo
men were studying in 422 schools
and colleges in 44 countries. At
the same time last year, the total
enrollment abroad was 1307.
Veterans are eligible for over
seas study under the G. I. bill
on the same basis as in the United
States.
Question of the Week
Q. I am negotiating to purchase
a home under the G. I. bill. The
appraisal value is lower than the
purchase price. Will the veter-
ans administration guarantee my
loan if I agree to pay the differ
ence in cash?
A. No. The veterans adminis
tration will not guarantee a loan
on a home where the appraisal
value is less than the purchase
price. This provision of the law
is for your protection.
