Yesteradys FIVE YEARS AGO From The Eagle, Feb 18, 1943 In a special service at the Evan gelical church Sunday morning, February 21, at 11 o’clock, the boys, numbering two hundred and over, who have gone into the armed forces from this and sur rounding communities or who have in past years had a part in community or high school life will be remembered. Lester Mulkey, owner of the Fairway Grocery, and J. F. Rose, meat market operator, announced yesterday their plans to move from Vernonia to Dallas, where they have leased a building. Probably before this page goes to press Vernonia high school will have a new high school athletic coach. Coach W. F. MacDonald, physical instructor here, asked at the most recent school board meeting to be relieved of his coaching duties. Oh, for the days of low prices! We had a real thrill in OunTown just the other day—when the Free dom Train stopped by! You’ve heard about it, of course —an actual train that’s touring the country to remind us again what true Democracy means. It carries such Americana as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and other immortal documenta that guarantee every citizen his liberty. A great idea! And from where I ait, we’re all riding along with that Freedom Train—right now—by liv ing in a country that protects our individual liberties—whether they apply to our right to vote, to choose our church, to speak our minds, or enjoy a glass of beer with friends.
