4 THURSDAY, JAN. 15, 194« THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON Work of the Age “The Story of American Rail- roads” is Stewart Holbrook’s lat est book. This means the story of the lumber industry L, for American railroading and lum bering have grown together. I’ve read it, as one whose pappy was a king snipe on the PIN— that is, when I was a boy my father was a section boss for a spell on the Pacific & Idaho Northern. And I’ve read it as a lumberman. It is prime reading all ways. The book is packed with the poetry of railroading. An unfor gettable picture in the Story is that of a lone locomotive abandon ed to rust in the middle of an Il linois prairie. Another landscape of the kind is the chapter, “Bio graphy of a Flagstop.” Here is really beautiful stuff, as in Hol brook’s nostalgic paragraphs about a boy and the mogul locomotive in the Hevan Woods of Maine, and in his high, wide handsome writing on the great Jim Hill. Panorama But “The Story of American ■Railroads” is a history job first of all. Thus M t . Holbrook masses his narrative on the birth and rise of the great carriers. In Chapter I he takes the reader inside and «round the whole panorama of American railroad development, from its place in the imagination of an American boy to such facts and figures as those of the current 398,730 miles of track which carry each day 24,000 freight trains and 17,500 passenger trains. Then the historian steams with out a stop back to the prophets of 1813. There he wheels on Oliver Ames, designer of steam flour mills and of a steam dredge won derfully named Orukter Amphibole «nd a prophet of steam railroads who stood well-nigh alone in his time. The Iron Horse really began to snort and roll in 1831. In the 1840’s railroad fever possessed the nation, and by 1851 the Erie, first “work of the age” had linked the Hudson and the Great Lakes.
