To You Who Have, I Speak
Kona Morris Workman
Boulder Camp, Dallas Oregon
Many of us, through the years,
have known what it is to want
and need many things we cannot
have, but few, if any, of us have
known what it means to be hungry,
without clothes to keep us warm,
and to see our children worn and
stunted because we could not give
them the essential food their
young bodies needed for growth.
Like the most of you who will
read this, I have been dismayed
at the selfish attitude toward the
national “sacrifice program” as
reported by radio and paper, but
I refuse to believe that the steady
dependable “just plain folks” of
our country are so selfishly care
less to the needs of those in the
war-ravaged lands. Those of us
who do not rob, murder or get
14 divorces, seldom “hit the head
lines”, nor do we get a chance to
tell the world about what we doi
We merely save that slice of bread,
do without that extra egg, pass
up the porkchop and go on about
our business. But I do think that
to the great majority of us the
program of feeding the hungry
ones in this post-war world seems
too vast to appeal to us person
ally. We are prone to think,
“Great Scott, I’m just one person.
What little I can do won’t amount
to a drop in the bucket, especially
in most countries than me adults,
but that says very little and you
would personally dislike to have
your children receive the type of
food assigned to them at this time
.......... warm, or even decent cloth
ing is almost non-existent, but
food is the necessary thing...........
These people are facing a fright
ful winter; they are not only short
of food and heat but they are
terrified at the imminent prospect
of war.
Time alone will tell
whether their fears are based on
fact or not, but to be terrified,
hungry and cold is not very pleas
ant. To my own personal know
ledge, the women of Europe will
refuse to take another war and
are prepared to turn on the gas,
along with their families, if an
other war does materialize............
You will have noticed from the
papers that the situation regard
ing food could not be more serious
than it is in Italy. The Dutch,
who were getting hopeful about
the food situation, are now hope
less and are curtailing their ra
tions each, month. Sweden, who
has never been rationed, is now
going on rations............. I have
been asked what is really needed.
Flour is not needed; sugar is
frequently adequate, but not al
ways. If you can afford it, send
sugar, but the following things
are essential:
canned butter
canned bacon
Mazola oil, or Spry, Crisco or

rice, which is not procurable in
any country
dried peas
Borden’s skimmed milk, which is
very cheap but richer than the
milk they get. Any other can
ned milks you can afford
dried fruits
Do not bother about anything
else because if they have these
regularly they can manage. If
you can send these things to
people they can pull through be
cause it helps to make their ra
tions endurable. They can get
cheese, but it is fats for which
they cry............. I might add that
the food situation in Belgium is en
tirely adequate................. supplies
from the Belgian Congo are reach
ing that country all the time, and
neither is there a food shortage in
Switzerland, so you need not send
food to either of these countries.”
End of quote
To the above general description
of the situation, I could add, did
space permit, excerpts from let
ters received from those to whom
I have sent food, that give heart
breaking pictures of conditions
over there, and just what a box of
food means to them.
May I send some of these people

The patronage that business firms in Vernonia receive
from people residing in the Upper Nehalem Valley makes pos
sible a bigger and better location for trading. It works this way:
As the volume of business increases because more buy
ing is confined to this trading center, it is possible for local firms
to improve their stocks and also to increase the amount of their
stocks. That improvement in turn provides you, the customer,
with better displays of merchandise from which to make your
purchases.
In this way, you have a part in making Vernonia a buy
ing center at which you may obtain every needed item.

to your door that you may share
your food with them? If you will
send me your name and address,
and state how many names you
want, I will forward the name of
someone who needs desperately
that which you have to give. And
while you are waiting for my
reply, which may take a few days,
pack your first box ready for
sending and write a letter to the
one whom it will go. I have
found that there is one thing they
want almost as much as they
want food and that is the com
forting feeling that somewhere in
our land is just one person who
really cares whether their over
seas neighbor lives or dies. And
into that letter put all the en
couragement, hope and friendship
that you can possibly express in
words.
Am I asking too much of you
who read? I do not believe so.
