TOURISTS SET RECORD SALEM—In the wake of what was the busiest summer travel season on record, with late vaca tionists still arriving in October to enjoy Oregon, preparations are now underway for an even bigger 1948 season, the Oregon state highway commission travel infor mation department reported last week. As a result of national advertis ing, Oregon has seen her tourist industry grow from less than 25 million dollars annually a little over ten years ago to an estimat ed value of 105 millions in 1947. IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED CANNON BEACH—Landing a small seaplane—equipped with no landing gear other than pontoons —on the sand at Cannon Beach was accomplished recently by a Tillamook flyer, and without dam age to his ship. The aviator said that he had made several previous dry landings, but that formerly he had been fortunate in being able to find a patch of grass, which he declared much superior to sand for landing with pontoons. CHEST FIGURES UP TILLAMOOK—Four communi ties throughout the county have topped their Community Chest quota and have surpassed their collections from last year. Twin Rocks collected a total of $71.85, a great increase over their collection of $2.00 last year. Ne tarts turned in $54.00 this year, $36.45 last year; Oceanside, $35.50 this year, $22.00 last year; and Bay City, $112.55 this year, $93.30 * last year. Tillamook county’s quota for the campaign, October 6 to 10, was $8,272. FIVE YEARS AGO From the files of October 22, 1942 Mrs. Tom Turner took over Wednesday as manager of the local telephone office, following the resignation of Mrs. Theda Church. Funeral services were held Mon day for August (Dad) Greenfeldt, Interment was at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. C. F. Heiber, chairman of the scrap iron salvage, reported that 280 tons had been collected and most of it shipped. The amount shipped at that time averaged 100 pounds per capita in the local collection area. TEN YEARS AGO From the files of October 22, 1937 The Vernonia Christian church at its service Sunday evening burned the mortgage that has been on the parsonage property for a number of years. It orig inally amounted to $900 and near ly $700 of this was raised in the last 18 months. E. H. Condit, county superin tendent of schools, was elected superintendent of the Vernonia grade schools at a special meeting of the directors Tuesday night. He indicated he would assume his new duties November 1, succeed ing W. Ralph Long, resigned. J. R. (Shorty) Lee has com pleted a hog pen said to be the best in the county. It covers a space 10-14 feet, and has a con crete inclined floor with gutter to carry away the drainage. Eby, who moved to San Diego, California. The Vernonia high school foot ball team came out of a temp orary slump last Saturday at Scappoose to take the Scappoose boys into camp 21 to 13. Playing on the team for Vernonia were: Hillman, Powell, Crawford, Aid- rich, Doney, Overson, Holtham, Graven, Nanson, Cline and Hol comb.
