This shift is reflected in the fact that food costs today are $1.29 for every dollar a year ago, while wages are up only to $1.19 on cvtny dollar. Farmers’ income is up to about $1.24 from a year ago. The overall “real income” aver age is 99 cents as compared with last year's dollar, and for wage earners it is lower. Investors Syn dicate’s survey shows. While in come is up to $1.18, living coats have risen to $1.19. Shelter is at $1.04 for each dollar a year ago, clothing at $1.19 and miscellaneous costs at $1.22. "Prosperity on the farms and farmers* increased purchasing power strengthen a segment of our economy that over the past quar- ter-centv.ry has had aerious periods of weakness," said E. E. Crabb, chafr.nan and president of Invest ors Syndicate. “The downward trend of purchasing power in ur ban areas may give rise to some questions as to a continuance of the present volume in many lines of business.” INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR All work and material guaran- teed. Hall, Second and Fourth Monday* Each Month Early seeding, packing the seed bed, and fertilizing are three im portant aids to successful fall pasture seeding, according to W. G. Nibler, county agent. Farmers in Columbia county, particularly on hill land, have had trouble with freexing out of fall seeded permanent pastures, The seeds of most permanent grasses and legumes are very small and the plants start out slowly. These small plants are easily, heaved out and killed by winter frost. If they do come through the winter, they produce much less feed the first year than early seeded pastures. Planting as early as possible in the fall and fertilizing with nitro gen will increase the size of these young plants and make1 them more resistent to freezing injury. Time of planting depends to a great extent upon the earliness of fall rains but time of plant ing can be moved up considerably if ground is ready to seed as soon as the rain come«. More and more farmers are adapting the practice of apnlving 100 pounds or more of ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate at ' seeding time. This will supply 20 to 30 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre. This nitrogen starts the young grass and legume plants off rapidly. It is cheap in surance in getting a start and pays for itself in extra pasture produced. Phosphate fertilizer at the rate of 300 pounds of super phosphate is also helpful in pro moting growth if used along with the nitrogen. A firm seed bed is one of the most important points in seeding any grass or legume. These small seeded crops sprout faster, grow better root systems and withstand winter freezing much better if planted on' very firm ground.
