Wallrite Building Paper $2.40 roll WE DELIVER MOST COMPLETE STOCK OF HARDWARE & BUILDING MATERIAL IN COLUMBIA COUNTY £ Health Group Cites Polio Care Information telling about the measures ,whjch gan be employed to ward off poliomej'litis has been prepared by the Columbia County Public Health Association. During late summer parents are apt to think with dread of the possibility that poliomeyltis or, as it is often called, infantile pa ralysis, may strike and cripple their chldren. Although there is as yet no definite means of pre vention and cure, there are mea sures parents can take to help ward off the disease. By keeping close watch, over children during late summer and early fall, when polio is at its' peak, any cases that develope may be discovered in the early stages so that recent advances in treatment can be most successfully applied. The disease is caused by a virus so small it cannot be seen through an ordinary microsdbpe. The virus attacks the nerve cells that con- trol the body's muscles, most com- monjy those of the arms and legs. It may weaken them or it may cause paralysis. Despite its name, infantile paralysis may strike older people and may cripple adults as well as children. The majority of people affected by polio never suffer from weakened muscles or paralysis. Of those whose muscles are paralyzed, more than half recover without serious after-effects. Recent developments in treat ment, plus the fact that they are now more generally available to victims of the disease, have done much to allay fear of infantile .paralysis. The National Founda tion for Infantile Palralysis, throughout the United States, is ready to assist communities where outbreaks occur and' to help in dividuals who jret the disease. A polio outbreak is a time for parents to keep their heads. Panic never prevented or cured a di sease. During an outbreak, child ren should be kept out of crowds and away from polio patients. They should be kept away from persons who have just come from an epidemic area. Since people who are over-tired are more apt to get the disease, it is well to see that children get plenty of rest and do not exercise too hard. They should not be allowed to stay in cold water too long. It is usually wise to postpone tonsils and ade noid operations until after the polio season is over. Since flies may be carriers of infection, waste and uncovered garbage should be eliminated from all communities. Sewage must be properly treated. Every effort should be made to protect f< od from flies and other insects. Child ren should be kept away from 1 athing nlaces polluted by sew age or other filth.
