Service Officer Reminds of Social Security Benefits In view of the frequency of deaths of World War II veterans reported, Dolph Stuart, service officer, today reminded surviving widows and dependent parents of social security benefits they may receive by virtue of the deceased time spent in active service. Amendents to the social security act of August 10, 1946, provide that “any veteran of World War II who dies within three years after his discharge is automatic ally fully insured under the old age and survivors insurance pro gram.” The effect of this amendent is to assure monthly income pay ments to the widow with minor THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. Peebles, Portland Field Officer manager for the Social Security administration, told Veterans’ Affairs officials. But he cautioned that widows without minor children are entitled to a lump-sum payment only, un less they are 65 or more years of age. This act applies even though the deceased veteran may never have worked in employment cover ed by the social security act, Stuart declared. He pointed out, however, that where death was due to service incurred disability, the VA’s com pensation or pension payments to the beneficiary will rule out ap plication of the social security benefits. "But a point to be remembered,” Stuart says, '“is that although the survivors may be receiving VA pension or compensation, they may be eligible for social security ben efits also, if the veteran had an insured status earned in the ord inary manner.” THÜRS., SEPTEMBER 18, 1947 S A newly born kangaroo is only about one inch long and weighs ap proximately 1/350 of a pound. Folks sometimes criticize us small-town editor^ for the way we often play up “little things’* ahead of big . . . human, local news in place bf world events. I can’t deny it. Read the Clarion and you’ll learn about the Martins’ golden wedding anniversary . . . about the community sing down by the river .. . the husking bee at Sober Hoskins’, where neighbors helped husk the corn, and later drank sparkling beer together. "Little things?” Maybe. But from where I sit, they add up to the bigger things we rail America: The friendliness of small towns ... the helping hand... the respect for one another's rights. And above all the love of fellowship and freedom — whether it’s freedom to speak one’s mind or choose between a glass of beer or buttermilk. I figure that if everybody looks after the "little things,” maybe the bigger things will take care of themselves. ; Copyright, 1947, United States Brewers Foundation v DEAD MAN RAISED "GRANDMA SAYS THE STORK.DAD SAYS UNDER A CABBAGE LEAF.
