I. Bill of veterans who entered service under the volun tary recruitment act of 1945 and whose enlistment period extends beyond July 25, 1947, the VA has announced. Benefits include loan guarantee, education and on-the-job training, and readjustment allowances for unemployed and self-employment. Veterans who enlisted or reen- listd within one year of October 6, 1945, date on which the volun tary recruitment act was approved, will continue to earn entitlement to G. I. bill benefits until the end of their enlistment. The period from September 16, 1940 through July 25, 1947 was set for other service personnel and world war II veterans already discharged as the time during which active service would count in granting rights under the G. I. Bill. Pensions Increased A 20 per cent increase in non service-connected pensions for vet erans of the Civil and Span'sh American Wars and in death com pensation to their dependents will be made with payments for the month of September, the VA an nounces. The VA asks that veterans or their dependents do not direct inquiries to VA offices as the increases will be paid automati cally in checks which will be sent out around October 1. The increase, voted by the last session of congress, is the first granted this group in recent years. The rise in cost of living and ad vancing age of this group was cited in granting the increase. Payments now range from less than $15 to $100 a month. They average about $100 for Civil War veterans, $40 for their dependents, $75 for Spanish American War veterans and $43 for their depend ents. Question of the Week Q. Why do I have to pay two monthly premiums instead of one when I reinstate my national Service life insurance policy. A. One premium is for the 31- day period following the date of lapse, during which the insurance was continued in force without payment of premiums the other is for the current month of reinstate ment. CHAMBLISS 761 Second Street To the Editor: Under date of September 5th, 1947, Governor Earl Snell writes me: i“With regard to your question, it is true I vetoed the measure passed by the legislature which would have placed a lien on the property of old people on assist ance grants. I am glad to provide this information and hope it will be helpful to you and to your friends.” Hope this will be read by all who have had false information on this. I also wish to say the sales tax, if passed, will increase the cost of all clothing and not help any pen sioner, only make clothes cost more. Yours, Mrs. A. E.
