Farrell has an nounced. Passed at the last session of the Oregon legislature, the law now requires drivers to stop for pe destrians occupying an intersec tional crosswalk in the driver’s half of the roadway or who are approaching ’’so closely as to be PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR All work and material guaran teed. Designed expressly for greater walking safety, the new statute underscores the principle that pe destrians must obey traffic sig nals and are subject to regulation as a part of. the over-all traffic picture. Cars still have right of way over pedestrians where no marked or unmarked crosswalks exist between intersections. City authorities are empowered to pro hibit mid-block or diagonal cross ing and other "jaywalking” pract ices. Subject to arrest are drivers who attempt to pass another ve hicle that has stopped to allow pedestrians to proceed in accord ance with the new law.
