Í THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1947 THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. TOPICS OF THE TOWN Mr. and Mr*. James Bradford announce the arrival of a son born Saturday, July 5 at 2:45 p.m. at the Wilcox Memorial hospital. He was named James Rocky and weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces. His mother is the former Nellaray Borton of Vernonia. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bradford, 710 S. E. Union, Portland and Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Borton, Ver nonia. Great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Rosa residing at 1020 N. Buffalo Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ward announce the birth of a son Larry Frances, 8 pounds ounces, born Saturday, July 5 at the Smith hospital in Hillsboro at 11:20 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Ward are residents of Vallejo, Calif ornia. Mrs. Ward will be at the home of her parents,Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morris for awhile with the new son. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Frank, Roy and Lois, returned Monday evening after spending a week at Bethel Gospel Park in Brooks. Rev. and Mrs. Gail McIlroy also attended camp meeting there. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Peterson and Jim and Beverly Herrin enjoyed a Fourth of July trip which took them around Mt. Hood Loop. They motored to Hood River before starting the trip around the moun tain and stopped at Camp Namanu on the Sandy to see their daughter, Janet, who is spending two weeks at the Camp Fire Girls camp. Guests at the A. F. Swanson home from Thursday to Sunday of last week were Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Gibson and son, Tommy and Mr. and Mrs. Denny Misner, all of Portland and Mr. and Mrs. Don Hughes of Ilwaco, Washing ton. Mrs. Gibson is Mr. and Mrs. Swanson’s daughter. Mrs. Nancy Tooley, part owner of the Hotel MacDonald with Sam Gregory, returned last Saturday from a plane trip to Alexandria, Louisiana where she visited her father who was seriously ill. She left a week ago Friday of last week. Douglas Culbertson and Duke Byers spent last week on a trip to California, going as far south as Los Angeles. Miss Zoe Miller from Bay City is here to visit at the Claude Knapp and John Burnside homes. Carol Bolmeier from Billings, Montana is spending two weeks here at the Wesley Bolmeier home. She is a niece of Mr. Bolmeier. J. W. Gibson, former resident of Vernonia, passed away at the Vancouver Memorial hospital Sat urday morning from a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rusow motor ed down the Redwood highway to Crescent City, visiting the Oregon Caves and Crater Lake. They left Monday and returned Friday evening for the four and one-half day trip which totaled nearly 1500 miles. Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Dow and daughter, Marcy, from Portland were here from Thursday to Mon day visiting Mrs. Dow’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Douglass. Mrs. Jack Heenan and Mrs. Dave Marshall visited Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stubbs at Waldport and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wall at Toledo last week. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Ruhl were at Manzanita from the Fourth until Sunday. Mrs. C. L. Anderson's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins, from Kansas City, Missouri ar rived here Saturday to visit at the Anderson home. The Andersons, the Hopkins and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Davidson of Portland plan to leave this week for a motor trip to Prince Rupert, British Colum bia. Miss Eilaen Enos is home from Cascade College, Portland for the summer vacation. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Kaufman of San Gabriel, California are here visiting her mother, Mrs. Emma Weed and family. Mrs. Fred Beckemeyer from Los Angeles returned to her home last Wednesday after spending a week visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Bolmeier, Mrs. Beck emeyer is a sister of Mr. Bolmeier. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Twiss are the parents of a boy born June 25 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Twiss is a sister of Miss Neoma McMullen. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest East and son, Thurman, spent last week at Heppner with relatives and friends and also spent last week end at Seaside. Mr. and M rs. Virgil Moore of Portland spent July 4th here with the Dick Fletcher family. Nancy Fletcher spent last week in Port land with her grandmother, Mrs. Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burrow and sons, Bob and Judd, returned to Portland Monday after visiting Mr. and Mrs. Judd Greenman since last Thursday. She is the former Phoebe Greenman. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mills and family spent several days at Sea side last week. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Davis returned Saturday evening from a week’s vacation trip which took them to points of interest in southern Oregon and northern California. They visited relatives in Roseburg, Eureka, Red Bluff and Stockton. Mr. and Mrs. John Elder left here the latter part of June on a vacation trip that is taking them through several mid-western states. His vacation began June 27 and will continue until July 14. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hearing left about the middle of last week for eastern Oregon where they plan to remain between two and three months. They are residing near Haines. The Hearings spent most Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Brewer and children spent Monday at the beaches as their July 4th holiday. Mr. Brewer worked last Friday, which prevented them from vaca tioning that day. Mrs. Grayce Bundy left Thurs day of last week for Yamhill where she spent the Fourth of July week end visiting relatives. She returned to her home here Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Edw. Salmonsen and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sund- land returned home Sunday even ing from Cannon Beach where they spent the week end of the Fourth. They left here last Friday. Sister Ethel S. Alexander and Sister Ester Whatcott, the mis sionaries representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Vernonia, will gp to Portland Saturday, July 12, to attend a missionary conference to be held in the Colonial Heights Ward Chapel. They will return Monday, July 14. I. O. Flaten of Portland called on his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Norris Soden Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Walter, a niece of Mr. Soden from Menlo Park, California also called one day last week. Mrs. Daisy Ornduff has sold her home here and is leaving for Sweet Home in the near future. Rev. and Mrs. H. L. Russell were in Newberg for the Fourth of July to attend a Nazarene picnic. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Eckland and sons returned home last Saturday afternoon after spending a week with Mrs. Partridge’s son and wife who are working on the government reserve near Huckel- berry City. They report a grand trip. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Miller of Portland and Mrs. Wink and grand daughter, Elsie Coleman, spent the week end with Mrs. Tom Henderson. Mrs. Ed Landsem and three daughters from Portland were here to see Mr. -and Mrs. F. A. Blount for a week. * Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Greenwood left here Sunday for Portland and from there by plane for Detroit, Michigan on a vacation and bus iness trip. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Whitsell of Ocean Lake spent the week end of the Fourth here at the home of his mother, Mrs. Zoe Whitsell, who returned here with them after spending a month at their home. Russell has been driving truck for a logging firm near Ocean Lake. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Hammond are parents of a son, Edsel Leon, Jr., born at 12:30 p.m. June 27, 1947 and weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Mrs. Hammond is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Graves. The Hammonds are liv ing in Seattle now and he is at tending the University of Wash ington. Mrs. Ed Frazee and daughter Betty Lou, left a few days ago for Stayton where she will be employ ed picking beans until about the time for school to begin. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Johnson and daughter spent July 4th at Hills boro. Guests at the Johnson home for part of this week will be Mr. and Mrs. George Lair and children from Los Angeles, California. Mr. Lair is a brother of Mrs. Johnson. The Vanderzanden clan celebrat ed a pleasant surprise birthday party for their oldest brother, George Vanderzanden from Banks, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vanderzanden at 1325 Bridge a few days ago. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Edward P. Smith of Port land, Mrs. Mary Spiering, Hills boro, Mr. and Mrs. H. Meiwes, Mr. ar.d Mrs. Ben Meiwes and daughter, Mr. anil Mrs. Joe Van derzanden, Lynn Vanderzanden Connie and William Meiwes. An other enjoyable day was spent Monday at Seaside by the group. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Culbertson and Lynne were here for the July 4th week end to visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Knight, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Culbertson. Edgar is at tending summer school at the University of Oregon and is majoring in business administra- tion. Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Skuzie motored to Tillamook Saturday to spend part of the day picnicking. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brickel left early last Saturday morning for a vacation trip that will take them to Wausau, Wisconsin where they will visit Mr. Brickel’s relatives. Mr. Brickel’s father is 87 years of age. They plan to return here about August 1. Lyman Hawken is expected home today, Thursday, from a fishing trip which was made down the Columbia from Portland and down the coast as far as Newport. The fishing boat captain is a brother of Mrs. Hawken and the vessel is a mine sweeper which was recent ly converted to a private fishing boat. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Hawken. Jr., and son were here from Port land Sunday and Monday to visit with his mother.
