Pat: “Why is it that a judge has so little time left for him- self?” Joe:' “I suppose it’s because he’s so busy.” Pat: “Wrong. It’s because he gives it away. They were at Puget Island. Jim Hill returned home Monday night from Silver Lake Washing ton where he’s been visiting the past few days. Mrs. L. P. Wikstrom has the mumps now. As we go to press, we hear that the oldest son of Clyde Lane, Stub Lane, was killed Monday by a log rolling over on him. He was a log truck driver. We are unable to get the place but was told he was killed at Clatskanie. A little bit of belated news we over-looked. A shower in honor of Mrs. Pete Henderson was given recently at the J. W. Howry home. Delicious refresments were served. The honored one received lots of nice gifts for the expected child. Mr. and Mrs. Austin Dowling were shopping in Vernonia Sat urday p.m. Mrs. Claud Kyser is back from the hospital. She isn’t very well. We understand she has to stay in bed for some time. L. P. Wikstrom is spending the few days this week in Green leaf. Planning Needed For Next Crop Growing next year’s strawberry crop should start as soon as this year’s crop is harvested according to W. G. Nibler, county agent, who points out .that care of the straw berry plant following harvest has a great influence on the following year’s crop. Topping of strawberry fields after harvest is not necessary unless it is needed to control crown moth or leafspot. Some Columbia county fields have shown considerable leafspot but crown moth has not appeared in many fields. If plants are to be topped, it should be done immediately following harvest taking care not to injure the crowns. Delaying topping ha3 reduced yields the following year. When leafspot is present plants should be topped and leaves raked to the center of the rows and burned as socn as dry. If crown moth is a serious problem, seven-eighths of the Mr. and Mrs. Percy Baillett received a visit from his brother last week from Washington. He was going to Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Ballett are planning to go also. The Dass service station is open now, and is a cool shady place to tarry for awhile. Its not complet ed, but is being steadily improved. Its convenient, being midway be tween Mist and Vernonia. THE EAGLE, VERNONIA, ORE. THURSDAY, JULY 3, 1947 patch should be topped and one- eigth left untopped for trap rows on the edge of the field. The un topped portion attracts many of the moths and gives partial to good control if this trap crop is destroyed after August 15 when the egg laying season for the crown moth is passed. Old strawberry fields that are to be plowed up should be de stroyed immediately after harvest to kill crown borers before the moth emerges. Cultivation of strawberry plant ing after harvest to eliminate weeds has a great effect on the following year’s crop. Weeds rob soil moisture and reduce the num ber of fruit buds set for the fol lowing year. Cultivation should be shallow to avoid injury to feed er rootil and SPORT CLOTHES the1 game, ball dinner; visiting, be well dressed in clashes that are denned for bke-new appear ance* and longer wear. Monday, folks kept stopping me, and saying: “Must have gotton out of hand, that picnic!” “Nonsense,” I says. “It was mighty pleasant and congenial. Just beer and hot dogs, cheese and cider.” And then they show me the headline reading: “WILD WIFE PICNIC HUS'SUCCESS.” Of cdHrse it was Elmer, my type setter, who had made the misprints: But is my face red!
