MELVIN SCHWAB, Bowling Editor Director Lists QUALIFYING ROUNDS NEEDED Primary Program Golfers who intend to compete in the Vernonia Country Club’s first tournament this year will have to complete their qualifying rounds soon to be eligible for the competition Kent Bauersfeld said Tuesday. In order to have the figures available players are asked to com plete the four rounds needed by this week end. All club members are invited to participate. ROY FRANK, High School Sports LOGGERS LOSE 10-4 THURS The Vernonia Loggers suffered another defeat here last Thursday, April 24, to the St. Helens Lions by a big margin, 10-4. Along with the 10 hits the Saints got off Byers, Vernonia pitcher, the Loggers committed 4 errors. Noble was the first man up for the Lions and he struck out. Kearsley grounded out pitcher to first. Humble doubled to left field and later stole third but Bassine ended the Lion’s c'.iance to score by striking out. For Vernonia, Grenia led the batting lineup and soon went down with three strikes called against him. Stuve advanced, to first, being hit by a pitched ball. On a freak play, Frank was put out with only one strike against him when a foul ball hit him. Byers grounded to the shortstop who relayed it to first for the put out. In the second inning, Henson struck out, Olson singled past second and Neveau reached first on an error by Wantland, advanc ing Olson to third. King singled to left field scoring Olson and King took second on the throw to the plate. Bratch walked, Noble hit a hard one that scored Neveau and King but Bratch was thrown out coming into third. The Log gers had a short inning with Schaumburg and Williams both popping out to the short stop. Nightwine grounded out short to first. The score, 3-0 in favor of St. Helens. Bassine led off for the Lions in the third gained possession of first by an error by Nightwine. Henson struck out, Olson grounded- second to first and Neveau struck out. For the Loggers, Roberts flied to center, Wantland grounded out short to first, Grenia hit a hard grounder that neither the first or second basemen could handle but Stuve struck out, end ing the inning. The first man to face Byers in the fourth was King who struck out. Bratch gained first when Frank pulled his foot from the sack. Noble was out pitch to first. Vernonia tied up the game in their half of the fourth and the action started when Jack Frank hit a long triple to left field. On sliding into third, Frank injured his ankle and Stuve, a courtesy runner was put in to finish his journey around the bases. Byers gained first by a base on balls. Schaumburg hit a ball which the third baseman muffed and Stuve scored. Williams hit a hard one that was good for a home run if a little boy in center field hadn't picked it up and handed it to the center fielder. Byers was out going into third. Nightwine hit to left-center field scoring Wil liams and Schaumburg. Roberts got a hit which scored Nightwine but Roberts was out trying to • ASTORIA DEFEATED Last Sunday afternoon saw the local kegglers defeat Astoria there. The match was close with the local bowlers barely winning. The Astoria team will play a return match this Sunday in the local bowling alleys. All those interested are invited to attend to watch the match. • Dance, Lunch Golfers' Plan Dated for the evening of Friday, May 9 is the Tee Off for Golf which will include a dance and buffet lunch for the members and friends. The get-together will be the first social activity this year for golfers. Some fortunate person attending will get a caddy cart which is to be awarded during the evening. Members and prospective mem bers are invited. Tickets are on sale at Bush Furniture and Kul- lander’s Jewelry Store. GRADE TRACK MEET SET FRI The grade school zone track meet originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon of this week was postponed and a new date set for Friday afternoon of this week, Superintendent Paul Gordon said the day the meet was first dated. Liklihood of rain caused the change. Another postponement may be necessary, but if it isn't, the schools will begin competition at 1 o’clock. To participate are Washington, Birkeknfeld, Mist and Natal. The league is as close as could be with every team in the race as yet. The last game of the league will probably decide who will be the best team. Dessy’s Alley’s is at the top right now, sporting a big 17 points, followed very closely by Heath’s Service who have chalked up 16 to their credit. The way the league stands now is: PTS. Vernonia Country Club TIGERS LOSE TO LOGGERS THURS. Sylvester “Ted” Williams pitch ed the Vernonia Logger nine to another win last Tuesday by de feating the Clatskanie Tigers, 4-1. Clatskanie was held to three hits while Vernonia got six, one of them a triple by Jack Frank. Al der was the pitcher for the Tigers and gave up three walks and 5 strike outs. Williams walked one man and struck out 10. Clats kanie committed three errors but Vernonia improved on their error- making and held their’s to none.
