This was an increase of 77 over January. The VA received 425 new ap­ plications for pensions or .com­ pensation last month and adjud­ icated 459 cases, leaving 915 cases still pending on February 28. In the Northwest, 72,051 vet­ erans received disability pay­ ments. | Assistance rolls listed 17,894 ex- GIs in schools or colleges in February, an increase of 765. On- the-job training, however, showed a decrease of 263 from January to a count of 6361. Job and school trainees included 2462 dis­ abled veterans under public law 16, marking a gain of 14. Eleven more amputee veterans received free automobiles from the VA last month, boosting Ore­ gon’s total to 93 for this benefit to ex-servicemen who lost the use of legs. The commission’s report, em­ bodying a recommended one-half of one per cent levy on the gross cash register intake of all bus­ iness, different from the Town­ send Plan proposal only in that did not urge the money so raised be used to alleviate suffering among the aged. The commiss’on, which worked for two years on the report—ever since the idea was brought to its attention in the 1944 Townsend Plan fight—said the program was designed primarily to aid all gov­ ernments rather than the state.
