Oregon farmers succeeded in
harvesting a record volume of
crops last year with comparatively
little loss caused by labor short­
ages, according to a year end sum­
mary of the activities of the
O.S.C. Extension service farm la­
bor work just issued by J. R.
Beck, state supervisor. The fed­
eral estimate of 4,658,000 tons of
field crops, exclusive of animal
products, constitutes a new high
for the state, 7 per cent above
1945 and 5 per cent above the pre­
vious records in 1943.
With the elimination of large
wartime labor groups such as
German prisoners of war and
Mexican nationals, continued suc­
cess this year will depend to a
great extent on farmers providing
housing either on the farm or in
community labor camps, Beck be­
lieves. Major effort of the farm
labor services throughout the west
will be in recruiting and direct­
ing transient help from state
to state and within the states to
provide them with ample work and
farmers with adequate labor at
the peak seasons.
Last year 15,739 different
farms, or more than 25 per cent
of the state’s total, obtained work­
ers through farm labor service.
Total placements reached 186,912
for the year despite far fewer
Mexicans and prisoners of war as
compared with recent years.
Of the total placements, 26,-
983 were of women and 51,629
of youth. These averaged about
three placements per individual,
Beck explained.
The balance,
made up of men, included 7483
placements of veterans.
A survey of out-of-state mi­
grant workers last year revealed
workers in Oregon from 36 dif­
ferent states. An, estimated 15,-
000 total helped with Oregon’s
various harvests such as berry,
