The Forum Ta the Editor: Will you allow me to correct gome mistakes in the statements of our friends the “Dollarites ’ who do not peerq to understand “Townsendites.” First: Our pension bill we will vote on soon is NOT a Town send pension. It is an Oregon state gross income tax pension law. Also our bill is not a "scheme,” it is an American plan. »We are doing everything in a legal, honest way. Also we re iterate our bill is a life insur ance and our reserves are the very same as Uncle Sam has, the American people. They say “we want everyone to be prosperous.” Really, as it a sin to wish others well? Of course we wish all of us to be prosperous. Why should part of us be able to pour money out like water on horse and dog races, prize fights, etc., while otners go hungry? It really is true that every winter there are 12 or 15 aged folks found dead in our eastern states. Coroners say "starved to death.” Do we love our dollars more than our aged parents? Hawaiian Island history of these last 11 years proves our 3 per cent tax plan does bring prosperity every where it is tried. It proves it does not bring bankruptcy, does not pyramid. We give proof of our statements!! Why does no one howl over the The Vernonia Country Club Log Hauling To Get Study Governor Earl Snell has an nounced the appointment of an eight-man committee which is to study the application of the pres ent laws and regulations covering the transportation of logs over the highways of the state. The committee has been asked to com plete its study within the next few months and report its find ings and recommendations to the 1947 session of the state legisla ture. The governor called attention to the fact that frequent suggestions had been made that loads should be measured on the basis of scale and not by weight and asked that the committee make a study of this particular feature of the proposed change. Particular at tention will be paid to the effects of log hauling upon the highways of the state. The highway commission has always opposed log hauling on the basis of scale, claiming that scale is little indication of weight. This contention is based upon a study made by the commission over a long period of time on the rela tionship between the two. This study showed that loads that were nearly identical in scale could vary to a great extent in weight. Technical Report No. 44-4, is sued by the state highway com mission, indicates that Douglas fir logs vary from 7000 pounds per MBF to 9700 pounds per MBF. Hemlock will run from 9000 to more than 11,000 pounds per MBF. Pine runs from 8000 to 11,000 pounds per MBF. Weight will vary between the young Douglas fir with wide sap and the old growth timber. Small timber is usually heaviest since there is more waste in slabs and deduction is made for this in the scale. We know we can sell more meat when prices are low. Further more, we believe meat prices will go down soon and we’ll probably have to take some inventory losses when they do. But what- ever the price, we feel we have an obligation to have supplies available and to let the customers decide whether they want to buy. We pledge you that our prices at all times will be as low as we can possibly make them, based on costs to us and earning only a fair profit. Football VERNONIA LOGGERS VS.
