HELENS—Columbia county is going to have to find a new as­ sessor after 1948. Fred Watkins, who has been in the assessor’s office for 25 years and has served as assessor since 1932, said last week that he would not bo a candidate to succeed himself when his current four- year term expires at the end of 1948. Watkins will be 71 when his term ends and. plans to re­ tire, taking advantage of the re­ tirement act recently enacted by the state legislature and accepted by Columbia county. GEORGE A. .NELSON TO RESIGN IN SPRING ST. HELENS—Some time next spring, George A. Nelson, dean of county agents in the northwest, is going to turn over to some younger man the job of helping Columbia’s farmers with their problems and become a farmer himself. He isn’t sure just ex­ actly when he’ll retire, but Nelson said last week that this winter will be his final one as county agent Then he’ll be just plain Rancher Nelson with 2450 acres of land out around Camp 8 in the Coast range hills to worry about.
