Vernonia,
“Allocations to foreign countries
thia year total more than one
billion pounds of refined sugar,”
Norblad stated, “and this is the
equivalent of 21 pounds of sugar
for each of the 37 million families
in the United States.”
“While thousands of pounds of
valuable Oregon fruit is wasted
through lack of canning sugar
and while many of our bakeries
have been forced to close, our gov
ernment has shipped abroad 261,-
000 tons of sugar during the first
six months of this year.”
Norblad said that continuous in
quiries made of the departments
during the past several months
have brought only evasive answers
regarding the shortage but that
this recent export information fur
nished the real answer.
“One of the most painful as
pects of this situation is that the
American taxpayer is paying for
the entire Cuban crop and then
seeing much of it shipped direct
from Cuba to Europe,” Norblad
concluded.
