Mildew in household fabrics is not such a, problem in the far west as in some other parts of the country, but even Oregon homemakers have trouble at times, reports Marjorie Tye, act ing extension specialist in cloth ing at Oregon State college. Miss Tye passes on a few sug gestions to combat the growth of molds that cause mildew. If midew invades clothes closets, keeping a small electric light burniing for a while will usually dry out the air enough to check it. A small electric fan to stir up the air hastens results. She says it is also good policy to leave closets and drawers open occa sionally for airing. Clothing and household fabrics are best allowed to dry thorough ly before they are thrown into the laundry hamper or chute. It is also best to spread out wet dish insertions ADV. Nehalem JOB ORIFTER- PREPARE FOR YOUR FUTURE THRU-VAS TRAINING A sample copy of the appli cation form and instructions to enlisted men of World War II in applying for their unused term inal leave or furlough pay was received this week by the depart ment of veterans’ affairs, from Maj. Gen. G. B. Erskine, retrain ing and reemployment administra tor. An accompanying letter to Di- retor George E. Sandy said that all community advisory centers and county veterans’ service of fices would receive the sample forms shortly. Although postoffices will re ceive supplies soon for veterans, and sample form will enable serv ice officers to study the instruc tions and be ready to help vet erans make their applications when the time somes, Sandy said. Earlier doubt as to whether photostatic copies of discharges would be accepted as proof of military service was clarified, as follows: “We know you were glad to learn that the armed forces acted favorably on the recommenda tion that photostatic copies of discharge papers, a swell as orig inals, will be accepted.” “Pass,” “liberty,” cr periods of temporary duty arc not charge able as leave or furlough, nor are sick, convalescent, or rehabilita- ton leave, but “delay en route” will be, the instructions indicate. In addition to the pay the vet eran will receive in his last pay grade before discharge, he will get 70 cents subsistence for each day of unused leave. Also, those in the top three pay grades who had dependants will receive an ad ditional $1.25 a day for quarters. In the army and marines this includes master, tech and staff sergeants. In the nayy and coast guard it means chiefs and first and second class petty officers. Pay is for a maximum of 120 days of earned leave, in non-ne- gotiable bonds, maturing in five years, and is figured at the rate of 2% days per month, minus the leave actually taken in serv ice. cloths, washcloths and shower cur tains rather than leavting them bunched. In summer it is safest not to sprinkle more clothes than can be ironed in a day. Materials are now available at drug and department stores to make fabrics resistant to mildew, say® Miss Tye. These are good to use on awnings or cotton show er curtans. for the price of two. Vernonia Temple No. 61 Meetings: I.O.O.F.
