run twice, he said, once for stu
dents about 3 o’clock that after
noon at the Washington grade
school auditorium and again in
the evening at 7:30 at the same
place. The later showing is open

LOGGERS PLAY
GAME TUESDAY
The Loggers played their first
Goldep ball tournament game in
Portland Tuesday evening when
they met Centenary - Wilbur
church on the church floor. Ten
boys made the trip with Coach J.
Hergert and Paul Gordon. The
three brackets of the tourney
have 120 teams entered and
Vernonia and Scappoose are the
only two towns representing Co
lumbia county.
Tuesday’s game with Centen-
ary-Wilbur brought a 38 to 34
loss for Vernonia principally be
cause the boys experienced a dif
ficult start which gave C-W a 16
to 3 lead at the end of the first
quarter and which the Loggers
were never able to overcome,
that lead was whittled down later,
however, with the half ending 23
to 16 for C.W. Vernonia will
not play any more games in the
tournament due to this 1 ss.

SCHROERER POINTS OUT
DANGER OF FERN BURNING
(Continued from page 1)
is not true. During the regular
fire season the new crop of fern
is green, covering the old. dead,
flashy materials. The f rn fire
does not burn with
lif' dent
heat to remove any of the heavy
debris on the ground such as
snags logs and large limbs.
The burning law is so de-
s'gned that the governor can close
the fire season after the first
of February if conditions make it
necessary. The state forester’s
policy will be to ask for clohure
in the northwest district if con
ditions get so that uncontrolled
fires are endangering timber
lands.
With such a closure it
will be necessary to secure a
permit befcre setting any fires
on or near forest land. Any fire
started without a permit will be
treated as a violation of law with
the sama action to be taken as
during the summer months.
If it becomes necessary to
have a pre-season closure it will
be advertised in the local papers
and over the radio. This closure
will not exclude burning but will
require permits which will give
the protective agency the op
portunity to set up certain safe
guarding restrictions before the
permit will be issued. Burning
without a permit will consequent
ly be a violation of law and will
be treated as such.
If weather conditions become
so that it is necessary to put this
closure into effect the protective
