school’s
hoop lineup totaled the points
necessary to defeat Rainier last
Friday and take top position in
the county grade league at this
time of season. The Washington
team held the lead at the end
of every quarter and held a mar-
gin of nine points at the 3rd
period stop. That margin nar-
rowed, though, before the final
period ended to a lead of five.

Indication that the track sea
son and spring are appoaching
comes with Coach J. Hergert’s
mention Monday that over 10
boys are already turning out for
early season warm-ups although
it will be a short time before
track training begins in earnest,
Signs of a good season are
evident with Loren Dodge and
Ralph Keasey both returning,
Both went to the state meet
last year, Dodge entering the
half-mile and Keasey the mile
events.
A short time after basketball
ends, track will get the principal
attention in order to enter the
Hill Relay Carnival on April 5.
That is the first competition
scheduled so far.
The Vernonia IWA was the
winner in Monday's game here
when the union team met the
Rainier Interstaters. The IWA's
scoreboard listing read 45 to
Rainier’s 34 in the first win for
the Vernonia quintet.
Winning the Monday game had
added significance for the IWA
five due to the Interstaters’
standing in the Kelso-Longview
league where they rate top po-
sition.
Two union players, Killian and
Bauersfclt, rated top listing for
their scoring, both hitting the
hoop for 14 points and Killian
was accorded the honor of the
scrappiest man on the floor.
The scoring lead was never in
doubt from the 1st quarter on.
By quarters the points read: 1st,
Vernonia 16, Rainier 4 ; 2nd,
Vernonia 22, Rainier 10; 3rd,
Vernonia 34, Rainier 26.
