Bell and their two daughters, Polly Lynch and Bessie Netka got off to an early start Mon. morning for their two months sojourn in the south. Mr. and Mrs. Ora Cock­ rell of Vernonia will be at the Bell home during their absence and will release information a3 to the whereabouts of the va­ cationers. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smith and two children of Sweet Home spent Sun. at the W. J. Lindsley home. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Lahmars of Portland were recent visitors at next week, Thurs., at the home of Mrs. I. E. Knowies. Pot luck as usual all day.—There seems to be some fishermen trying their luck along the river.—Earl Roper made several trips to Dr. Allen in Astoria last week and this for medical attention. A family moved here from Eugene last week, they are oc­ cupying the old Walter Turner house on the hill. Wilfred Holce, recently dis­ charged from the navy, is work­ ing for Mathews Bros. Lumber Co. Place 2 cups washed split peas or lentils in a large kettle and « add 2 quarts of water, 3 or 4 stalks of celery, 2 carrots, 1 medium-size onion, a bay leaf, and salt and pep­ per. If you have it, add the bone left from a roast, a few slices of salt pork or bits of bacon sauteed until brown, or a couple of tablespoons of meat dripping. Boil rapidly for 20 minutes and then simmer slowly about 2 hours, or until peas are soft and tender. Add more water if necessary. Serves 6 to 8. Rice is so easy to keep and so con­ venient to have on hand that it's a good idea to cook plenty extra. Just store it in a covered container in the refrigerator. Here are some favorite ways with leftover rice— RICE CAKES— To each cup of cooked rice add 1 slightly beaten egg. Mix well. Drop by spoonfuls in hot shortening in a frying pan. Brown slowly, turning once. Serve hot, plain or with syrup. RICE WAFFLES OR MUFFINS —Substitute cold, cooked rice for % the flour in your favorite waffle or muffin recipe. Bake as usual. ADD cooked rice to soup, stuffing, or make it into rice pudding.
