GI’s Urged to
Contact Board
Information from th« Columbia
county selective service board
at St. Helens indicates that many
returned veterans are not re
porting to the draft board that
they have been discharged from
the service. This last report of
servicemen to the board is one
required by law and when re
ceiving the discharge the service
man is informed of this duty
and that it must be done within
10 days after being separated
from the service.
It is not necessary to make
the report to the man’s local
board. The report can be made
to any board and is necessary
9
whether a man volunteered or
was drafted and especially in-
eludes those who enlisted at 17
and so are not registered.
Purpose of the report is that
the board wishes to give the
serviceman his new class ifica-
tion card because the draft law
is still in effect and the card,
which will bear the classification
I-C, must be carried at all times.
Other benefits which may be
derived from the report back
are that the board will notify
the man’s former employer if he
wishes his old job back and give
him such other aid as is possible
under the law. The veteran is
also urged to have his discharge
recorded for his own protection.
Columbia county board head
quarters are in the K of P build
ing at St. Helens.

Today’s grownups are only yes
terday’s children who once
stood before a fireplace on the
Christmas Eves of the past, or
who, just before Christmas,
were as good as they could be.
The heart of the Christmas
season is friendship and eternal
youth, and we could not ask for
finer friends than ours. It makes
us happy to greet all our friends
this Christmas season of 1945
with the best of Yuletide
wishes.

★ Stealing over the countryside is the blessed
peacefulness of Christmastime. The very air
seems charged with it. Even the birds—what
few remain—appear to share in the general
rejoicing that has come over the world.
We earnestly hope that this Christmas sea
son of 1945 will bestow unusual blessings
upon you and yours . . . that it will bring to
your home the soft glow that even Christmas
tree lights cannot bequeath—the full joy of
Christmas seasons long past but forever
remembered. May such a Christmas be yours!
