Rosson, direct- or of the state department of veteran’s affairs, pointed out re- cently in outlining a program whereby service men and women may complete their secondary ed ucations. A unit is the equivalent of one school year of study in one sub ject, and 16 ’.nits are required in Oregon for high school grad uation. The awarding of two un its for a veteran’s basic training has been announced by the stat:» department of education. I- addition, high schools may allow credits for training received in army or navy service schools, based upon an evaluation guide prepared by the American coun cil on education. Here are tur- ther steps the veteran may take to secure the necessary credits for graduation: 1. Enrollment in full-time high school classes. He will be re ceived the same as any ether stu dent, but if over 21 years of age may be subject to the rules covering payment of tuition as they apply in his particular school district. 2. High school correspondence when beaming faces tell that Christmas is very, very near, we are reminded again of the supreme value of friendship. He who has no friends, though he may have amassed a fortune, cannot be happy. We have many friends in this area — friends from many years back as well as friends who have become friends during this past year. These friendships are a great source of pride and happiness to us. To all these friends we wish a very Merry Christmas Season. NEHALEM MARKET and GROCERY Lcwell and Wayne Hieber cup of light corn syrup and % cup of water. Information, and appli cation, may be obtained by writ ing the general extension divi sion,, Oregon state system cf higher education, Eugene. These courses are accepted by any standard high school in Oregon for credit toward graduation. The veteran is advised to consult his principal first, however, to avoid duplicating courses he may have taken before entering the service. Because these courses are proved by the department of vcation, enrollment fees can paid under provisions of the bill of rights. Courses offered by the extension division include all the required high school sub jects in English, science, math ematics, and social studies, in ad dition to pre-flight aeronautics, accounting and business English, mechanical drawing, and high school Latin and Spanish. 3. A combinai on of corres pondence and regular high school work, if his principal approves. If the veteran needs, say, five units to graduate, he can clear four of these by one year of high school, and he may also complete his fifth unit by taking a corres pondence corrse cn the side. Principals and high school teach ers have been asked by State Supt. Rex Putrjam to assist the veteran in his correspondence study problems. 4. N ght school classes con ducted in Salem and Portland. 5. Part-time attendance in reg- ular high school, to fulfill indi vidual graduation requirements. The veteran can get his best in formation cn this from his high school principal, or from a vet eran’s organization in his home town. ... and on earth peace, good will tou’ards men.
