Let's Be Sociable Party Honors 18th Birthday Tuesday RIVERVIEW —A gay little birthday party was hold at the Merle Cline home last Thursday afternoon when Mrs. Cline en tertained in honor of her son, Gordon's, 18th birthday. Those present weje Mrs. Myrtie Cline, Miss Mary Ann Jones, Gerald Riley and Mrs. Paul Meyer and her daughter, Paula. Consider able of the gayety arrived with the announcement of Japan’s sur render and Gordon will have lit tle trouble in remembering this momentous date. A delicious luncheon was served by the host- Mrs. Hall Surprised By Reunion Thursday Mrs. N. B. Hall’s children were all home Thursday, Aug. 16th to surprise her and to enjoy a dinner together. Those who were here were: Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Mills of Gold Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Art Kirk and daughter, Arlene, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fow ler. Also present were her cous ins from Upland, Cal. The Mills returned via Port land for their son so ho could return home with them. He has been in St. Vincent’s hospital where he underwent an operation recently. Devotions were led by Mrs. Alice Malmsten, the subject being Christian Literature. Two chapters cf the study book, “The American Indian” were given by Mrs. Le Roy Christensen. It was decided to hold the Sep tember meeting in the evening and invite husbands and friends. An interesting report on the missionary conference, which was held at Jennings Lodge, was giv en by Mrs. Ira Baucom, who was the delegate, and Mrs. Allen Backer and Mrs. Louis Laramors. Delicious refreshments wfere served by Mrs. Dave Marshall, Mrs. J. H. Burnside and Mrs. B. Kirkbride. When Is a Ride Not a Ride? A goodly number of ladies ar rived early in the P.M. armed with del'cious refreshments. The gifts were useful and lovely. The Misti Helping Circle present ed her with a beautiful wool blanket. After the refreshments were served, the guests were taken through the mansion on a tour of inspection. All pro nounced it very fine. Best wishes were sounded as the guests took their departure in the late afternoon. Receotion Honors Backer Familv A group of the church mem bers and friends gathered at the Evangelical church Friday even ing, Aug. 17th, for the recep tion of Reverend Backer and family. A piano prelude was played by Mrs. Lois Clark and the program began by Reverend Livingstone offering prayer. Then group singing followed after which a corsage was presented to Mrs. Backer and a buttoniere to Rev. Backer.« A welcoming speech was given by Henry John representing the church. Miss Sally Kasper sang “Hom ing” and an encore. A welcome from the minist ers of this community was pre sented by Rev. Livingstone, fol lowed by a lovely piano solo by Miss Enos. Mrs. Dan Cason, rep resenting the Sunday school gave a welcome back speech. Mrs. Marvin Kamholz sang two lovely and appropriate solos. Rev. Backer gave a short reply to the many welcomes. Mrs. Ira Baucom presented Rev. and Mrs. Backer with a gift from the church. Benediction was then given by Rev. Livingstone. Refreshments of cake and cof fee and cocoa were servied buf fet style and a lovely time was had by all. 85th Birthday Is Celebrated KEASEY — Mr. and Mrs. E. Bruce and Mrs. Jim Bannon of Portland were visitors at the Herb Counts home Sunday. Alsi there were Otto Bittner and Lloyd Osborne. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bittner and Lloyd Osborne left Wed. for the hop yards near Salem. Mrs. Herb Counts and daugh ter were in Portland Wed. to vis it with Mrs. Alma Sitts, former ly from Vernonia, on her 85th birthday. Mr. snd Mrs. A Toliver and Mrs. V. E. Cleveland of Port land were callers at the George McGaughey home recently. Mr. and Mrs. Peffley and family were visitors at the G. 0. Brown home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Westerburg of Garibaldi and Ted DeWitt and Lee DeVaney were week end callers at the J. O. DeVaney home. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Krieger and family were callers at the Hodgson home Wed. eve. Herb Counts has gone to Myrtle Creek to visit with rel atives. Mrs. G. O.
