Their resentment, in view of the canning sugar shortage, is certainly understandable, if the story were true. According to recent joint releases of OPA, WPB and the department of ag riculture, their concern is not justified by the facts, Here is the government’s story: No sugar has been allocated for the manufacture of beverage alcohol in connection with the July “liquor holiday,” the war food udiuiuislration, the office of price administration and the war production board said a few days ago. They stated further that no sugar had been allocated for this use during the two past “releas- es” of distillery facilities for the production of beverage alcohol. The three agencies added that they do not anticipate any future allocations to beverage alcohol manufacturers “for as long as sugar remains in tight supply.” Officials said that the use last year of some 900,000 tons of sugar in the form of high-test molasses for industrial alcohol may have contributed to the er roneous impression that sugar is being allocated for the manufac- tupre of beverage alcohol. This industrial alcohol was urgently needed for the manufacture of synthetic rubber, smokeless powd er, and other war-vital materials they pointed out. The three agencies do not expect even any high-test mo lasses to be used for industrial alcohol this year, but said that some blackstrap molasses (a by product of cane sugar manufac ture) would be used for this purpose.
