Livesy, regional OPA agricultural relations advisor has announced, under the new meat control order' effective April 30 which is aimed to provide better distribution of our present short supply of meat. “The local board will assign the farm slaughterer a quota in pounds of dressed meat for each of the four quarters of the cal endar year,” Livesay explained, “equivalent to 100 percent of what the farmer sold or gave away during the corresponding quarters of 1944, provided he turned in the ration report? and coupons required under the ra tioning regulations. There is no restriction n the slaughter of livestock which the farmer has raised and from which he wishes to obtain meat for home consumption, Livesay said. Class II slaughterers, which in clude non-federally inspected commercial slaughters and retail slaughterers, must register with the Portland district OPA office by May 14, and will be given quota basis equivalent to the full live weight slaughtered in 1944 if they collected ration points during this period and turned them in to OPA. All Class II slaughterers will be given an in terim quota basis for the May- June period. WAR BONDS Now is. the time to be on the look out for the strawberry root weevil according to George A. There should be an early application when they are first found and then another treatment just before the time of picking the strawberies. Spittle bug will be emerging about the middle of April, and they should be treated at the present time. The treatment for them is % per cent rotenone dust diluted with diatomaceous earth and applied at the rate of 30 to 50 pounds per acre. There should be one application at the time the spittle bug masses are becoming numerous on the plants. However, if they begin to reoccur later on, another dust ing should be given in a couple of weeks. The dust must come in contact with the spittle bug masses in order to control the bug.
