The Forum WHAT HAPPENS AT DEATH? Part II The “breath it life” has been the subject of endless discussion. As has been pointed out, it comes from God Himself, for with Him the We, Telephone Operators, wish to thank you for your pa tience and courtesy in these try ing times. Although the best in our service is still the world, we know that it is not up to the standards we reached in peace time. Half of us are new to the job we are physical and and all working under nervous strain. We are trying to meet a tremendous demand war with 1939 equip ment and fewer people to handle it. We could not have carried on without your bearance. We understanding appreciate your for courtesy and patience, and would like you to know it. Sincerely YOUR TELEPHONE OPERATORS WEST COAST TELEPHONE CO is “the fountain of life.” Psalms 36:9. Man is not like a watch thait is once wound and then left to exhaust the motive power of its springs and run down. Po tatoes, beans, corn, etc., must be eaten for the restoration of tissues and muscular energy, but they do not give life. (Matthew 4:4.) We depend constantly on the life that we receive from God, “for in Him we live, and move, and have our being.” Acts 17: 28. The beasts and birds have “the breath of life” (Genesis 7:13-15) or “the breath of the Bpirit of life,” in their nostrils too. Vers es 21, 22, A.R.V.) They are also spoken of as souls. (Genesis 1:20 margin; Revelation 16:3.) That can be easily explained, for they and man belong to the animal kingdom, and “they have all one breath.” Ecclesiastes 3:19. “All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.” Verse 20. Then what is the soul? The liv ing man is a soul. It is a body endowed by the Creator with life. Adam was FORMED of the dust of the ground, and the breath of life from God was breathed into him, in order that he might be come a living soul. Where was Adam before that happened? He did not yet exist. The dust of the ground existed prior to that time, but the elements of the soil were not Adam. When the two things—the dust of the earth and the breath of life from God —were combined by the Creator in the proper way, this combina tion resulted in the existence of a living soul. A living soul is a composite thing. Let us illustrate the point. The electric current alone, for example, is not a light. The bulb alone is not a light. But when the current is properly run into the bulb, the light exists. Sup pose that we have here in one place a pile of boards and in another place a pile of nails. The pile of boards is not a box. The pile of nails is not a box. But when the boards, and the nails are properly combined, a box ex ists. Now let us consider the matter from another angle. What hap pens to the light when the cur rent is turned off? The current alone is not a light. Neither is the bulb. When the current is separated from the bulb, the light no longer exists. What happens to the box when the nails are pulled out and put in a bag, and the boards are removed and placed in a stack? Does the box continue to exist? No. If man as a living soul never existed until the dust of the earth and the breath of life were combined by the Creator to make him, what happens to a man when the breath of life is separated from his body? “Then shall the dust return to the earth AS IT WAS: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7. Man ceases to exist at death. Death is the opposite of life. Death is the cessation of life. Death is the creative pro cess reversed.” (To be contin ued) G. F.
