LET'S BE SOCIABLE Miss Lillian Laird Married on Christmas Day at Camp Butner Wedding Rites Read Three Days Bef<?re Christmas for Couple Coming as a surprise to her many friends here is the an nouncement this week of the marriage of Miss Lillian Laird, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. George Laird, to Cpl. Edwin Roberts. The ceremony was performed Christmas day in the chapel at Camp Butner, North Carolina by Chaplain John F. Herian. MIST—Gaily and loudly pealed the wedding bells 3 days before Christmas for S. Sergeant L. P. Wikstrom from Camp Beale, who came home on a 15-day fur lough to visit his parents, the L. P. Wikstroms. The bride was Clara Bond from Vernonia. They were married at Kelso, Wednes day, then came back here until Sunday, when “Sonney”, as he is called, had to report for duty. The Wikstroms took the newly weds to Portland Sunday morn ing. We wish them all the joys of life. Congratulations! Cpl. Roberts is the son Bf Mr. and Mrs. Charles Roberts of New Martinsville, West Virginia The couple met during the time both were attending Oregon State College, he being an ATSP student there. The bride wore a two-piece aqua gown with brown acces sories and carried a corsage of orchids. She was attended by Mrs. Marguerite Burton, her sis ter. Best man \ytis Pfc John Con rad. Missionary Society To Meet at 7:30 The Woman’s Missionary Soci ety of the Christiain church will meet at the home of Mrs. J. T. Brady, Friday evening, January 5, at 7:30 o’clock. Announcement Kathryn Greathouse will be in Mrs. Knight’s Beauty Shop during her absence. MARINELLO GRADUATE 8 Year’s Experience Club Members Enjoy Christmas Party Occasionally during the year the members of the Vernonia Study club forget for a time anything of a serious nature and just have fun. One of these oc casions is the annual Christmas party. This year the party was held on December 21st at the home of Mrs. Sam Hearing, Jr., on B street. There a beautifully dec orated tree with gifts piled high at its base was the center of attraction. Games and contests provided entertainment and small prizes were won by several mem bers. A highlight of the evening was the carrolling by the high school glee club under the direc tion of Mrs. Robert Martin. Later carols were sung by the club members and gifts were dis tributed. Refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Marvin Kamholz, Mrs. Paul Gordon and Mrs. Harry Culbert son. The next meeting will be on January 4th at the home of Mrs. Judd Greenman. Besides the hostess other members present were: Mrs. Judd Greenman, Mrs. C. L. An derson, who held 2nd score; Mrs. Merle Ruhl and Mrs. A. J. Hughes. Guests were Mrs. Frank Hartwick, Mrs. John Grady, who held high score; and Mrs. Chet Alexander. Bridge Party Held Tuesday Night At her apartment in the Hoff man building, Miss Freda Beck entertained at bridge Tuesday' night the following: Mrs. Ernest Steen, Mrs. Robert Martin, Mrs. Harold McIntyre, Mrs. T. R. Moon, Mrs. Frank Hartwick, Mrs. Bill Nichols and Mrs. Ben Brick el. Mrs. Moon held high score and Mrs. Brickel next high. The exchanging of Christmas gifts and serving of refreshments by Zelda Lamping, hostess, were other features ‘ of the event. Pythian Sisters will meet next at the Odd Fellows hall January 10th at which time installation of officers will be held. The Women’s Relief Corp3 held its annual Christmas party Dec. 21, at I.O.O.F. hall. The past year’s birthday friends were revealed and names drawn again for the new year. After a short session, a very interesting program was given and dedicated to Bernice Dass who has joined the Wacs and was leaving Dec. 31 for Des Moines, Iowa. A present was given Bernice by the worthy master and a star was added to the service flag. After supper, Bernice and the Corll sisters played for the entertainment of the crowd. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Peterson called at the D. Davis home in Vernonia Sun. Mr. and Mrs. Ike Dass and family drove to Grey’s river Sun. before Christmas and spent the day with Mrs. Dass’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cook. Mr. and Mrs. Cook came over from Grey’s River and spent Xmas day with the Dass family. Norman Peterson came home from school at Gaston Dec. 20 and spent. the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Pet erson. Mr. and Mrs. L. Car michael and John and the V. W.
