4 Thursday, October 5, 1944 Vernonia Eagle At the Churches Newspapers Different Here Than Those in Europe St. Mary’s Catholic Church This week has been set aside for the annual ob servance of National Newspaper week. This year it is appropriate to point out the difference between news papers in this democracy and newspapers printed in axis-dominated countries under the rule of dictators. One of the first moves of a dictator has been the suppression; or attempted suppression of the princi pal news disseminating agency, the newspapers, in the country in which he rules. Only by such tactics is it possible to mislead the people into his way of rule. By suppression he prevents the printing of truthful news that is based on fact and substitutes the printing of news that is based on his wishes which in turn further strengthen his ruling power. That has been the case in Europe, the dictators having control of the press, instructing editors what to write and re quiring that such be written, or else! Consider, now, a comparison of the press of Europe when dictators were in power with that of this nation. Here newspapers gather their news stories from in formation which they seek. Papers are not instructed what to write or how to write, but gather the informa tion for news from the events and people which make that news. Consequently, news coverage is complete and truth ful, a decided contrast to that in axis countries.
