4 Thi lav, July 20, 1941 Vernonia Eagle The Big Boss Is Here Bed Cross Plays Important Role at Home, Abroad Mention is made in a news article elsewhere in this issue of a luncheon planned by the Red Cross this Saturday. That mention brings to mind the work that the Red Cross is doing both here and overseas in aid ing soldier* and in every humanitarian way. Those who attend the luncheon at St. Helens will hear information about a traveling X Ray laboratory which will make available to everyone the opportun ity for free examination to determine the .presence of tuberculosis. The effort being put forth by the Red Cross in this one respect alone makes deserving the annual pur chase of Christmas Seals and the membership drive which is conducted each year. But this one effort is far from the entire scope of Red Cross work. The work that is being done to relay messages be tween civilians in occupied countries and residents in America is aptly told in an official release by, the office of war information this week. It states in part: “More than 2,000 messages per work day between residents in America and civilians in enemy-occupied countries were handled last year by the Red Cross Home Service Inquiry Unit. During the first three months of this year, 157,607 messages were ex changed through the Red Cross. “The average time required to get an answer to a message to Europe is nine months. Delivery is often delayed because of deportation, shifting population and other upheavals resulting from war, but every possible effort is made to get the message through.” This release does not mention the relaying of mes sages between service men and their families or vice versa, it does not mention the blood plasma work or the efforts that are made to help the families of ser vice men, and it does not cover the wide scope of the other work carried on. To return to the X Ray unit which is destined to visit the county this fall or winter, that unit makes available to all the chance to determine free of charge the presence of tuberculosis. With such in tensive work being done to stamp out the disease, the hope that tuberculosis will almost become a thing of the past seems close to realization. It follows then as clearly as day follows night, that if there is no law, there is no such a thing as sin, and therefore no need of a Sa viour; but we DO need a Saviour for Paul says: “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that be- lieveth.” . . .
