Miller, pastor of the Assembly of God asks ^ome questions of N. J. Reasoner, pastor of the Church of Christ, St. Helens, Ore. M. Have you turned “blue-nosed reformer ?” R. My mirror has not revealed it, but if the interests of a man are indicated by the color of his note, I’d rather be a “blue-nosed reformer” than a “red-nosed deformer.” M Do you really believe you can make men good by IciW 7 R. No! Certainly not. God, Himself, gave that system a chance for 1500 years in His dealings with the Israelites, only to discard it for the era of divine grace. M. Then just what may we expect to accomplish by voting Columbia county “dry?” R. We wish to make it as hard as possible to do wrong and as easy as possible to do right. M. Is the drinking of alcoholic beverages wrong? R. Physically, it is a serious mistake—an injury to the human body. Insurance statistics compiled through 200 years experience prove conclusively that the moderate drinker shortens his life 17 per cent. Less accurate statis tics show that from 25 per cent to 35 per cent of the mod erate drinkers become immoderate drinkers. Inherent in alcohol is the destroying effect upon living tissue. The higher faculties are first affected, such as the moral na ture, then the sober judgment goes, causing the drinker to babble nonsense, and finally the muscles are increasingly impaired until they cease to function. Alcohol is definitely a narcotic poison in any size dose. 51/2 ounces .of pure alcohol will cause death. M. Then you want to vote Columbia county “dry” to protect the drinker from his own ignorance? R. That would be a worthy result, but as Almighty God permits a man to sin till it kills him, if that were the only result. I would tackle the evil from another angle. But the consumption of alcoholic beverages is more than a personal affair. It is a social evil of gigantic proportions. M. Just what do you mean by a “social evil?” R. I mean that the innocent must suffer with the guilty. Go to the Oregon “foolish house" near Salem and look at the deformed bodies. See the man with the head of a giant and the body of a tiny child. Listen to the morons talk. It makes the soul sick, yet drink is the chief cause of it all. Oregon’s state hospitals for the treatment of nervous disorders are crowded with insane due to fortified wine. Who pays the taxes? A professor of Willamette university at*Salem made a special study of one family, with startling results. A drunkard of early Oregon history turned loose upon the state a polluted blood stream from which has spring criminals galore—murderers, prostitutes, thieves, etc.—not to mention paupers and incompetents, and the cost through this one drunken family has reached stag gering figures. I do not recall the exact sum, but is must be nearly a quarter million dollars. You can look that up for yourself. The tax payers foot the bill. M. Would you include the cost of drunken driving as a social evil from drink? R. You would, I am sure. So would every sane man. Have you ever seen human brains strung along the high way? or heard shrieks of one pinned under a burning car? or witnessed the suffering of one whose thigh was driven up into the pelvis? Would you like to take a long passenger trip with a drunken engineer? or a trip by air plane when the pilot was exercising his personal liberty, with a bottle on his hip? Drinking is a social evil and should be prohibited by law. M. But they tell us it is necessary to supply our soldier boys with beer and other beverages to keep up their morale. R. Yes, I have heard that slander upon American young manhood. Men will fight for a just cause without being “doped” to do so. Even the unjust c^use of Hitler’s ambition and hate has been very valiantly supported—but his army is “DRY.” Indeed, with practically the rest of the world against him, the United Nations have had to extend themselves to the limit to win the victory which is now; apparent. The Swedish army made a test worthy of mention. Six soldiers fired 30 shots in 30 seconds at 200 yards, the first day without alcohol. Then the night before the next test they were each given 2/3 of a glass of brandy, and the next morning 20 to 30 minutes before the second trial they were given another glass 2/3 full. With alcohol, they hit 3 out of 30 shots, without alcohol, they hit 24 out of 30. Alcohol—induced ineffeciency may have cost many an American life already. It is a crime against our voung manhood to enslave so many off them to a worse master than Hitler—the mastery of appetite. M. But you are talking about the army. What have you to say about civilian use? R. Drink is a major cause of absenteeism. Accidents bulk large, and many are induced by drink. Have you had to wait for goods you ordered because transportation was congested? A tremendous tonnage of beer gets delivery— and that uses gas and rubber. Perhaps you have bought groceries with no bag to hold them. The paper pulp that is going into the manufacture of beer containers must reach into the millions of tons. On every count the liquor traffic is a tremendous bill of expense. M. But do not the tax on it, and the license fees bring in a fine profit to the state? R. Oh! When you give the liquor trade $20 they very generously give you back one dollar. But that is superficial reasoning. A single criminal case pay cost the state thousands df dollars. A single accident may take the lives of several people, each with an economic value of many thousands of dollars. But the money value of loss from degeneracy, pauperism, stunted childhood, broken homes, habit-enslaved men and women cannot be estimated. Be yond question the state loses. Miller: I must go now, but I have many other ques tions I want to ask. May we get together again and go in to this matter more fully? Reasoner: I'll be delighted. There are so many things I’d like to say, too, when time permits. We just scratched the surface today.
