4 Thurscl -, December 30, 1943 Those Who Are In It With a Yank like you, sad poet, what a mug you are, old bean. Where the din of canned music robs girl of blessed sleep, And she wakes at early morning •to the snorting of a jeep. Somewhere in Australia, where the nights were made for love, Where a Yankee reeling home ward calls down curses from above, Where you can’t enjoy the moon light or the balmy tropic night. For always ‘roynd the corner, there’s a blinking Yank in sight. Somewhere in Australia, where the air raid sirens scream, Where the Aussie girls are get ting thin for lack of their ice cream, Where the picture shows are crowded out with Yankees pleasure bent, Who think the world was made for them, their dollar and their cent. Somewhere in Australia, where the mails are always late, Where you never get a case on time, ‘cause Yankees musn’t wait. Where you can’t buy chocolates, since the Yankee horde has come, And you can’t walk down the footpath without comandeering gum. Somewhere in Australia there’s a Yank whose name is Mud, And we’ll never rest twixt Heav en and earth until we have his blood. So take him back to ‘Frisco, let him hear that mission bell, For despite the Japs and Tojo, we can manage just as well. SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND 4 In a letter received from Har old Davis by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Davis, he writes: ‘‘Dad, you told me all about one of your hunting trips, so I'll try to tell you about one of ours. “You hear and read all about the Fortress trips but never about ours. I assure you that the Germans know we’re over here, tho. This isn’t by any means the hardest trip nor the easiest one either, by a long ways. Sometimes we catch them flatfooted and don’t even get shot at. That’s the “gravy train,” tho, and it wouldn’t even be in teresting to read about. I assure you that I have no objections to them, tho. “They woke us up at 5:30 in the morning and said we were to be briefed at 7 o’clock. You put on all the warm clothes you have and about that time one of the enlisted men brings the crew's jeep up. Next comes breakfast of powdered eggs, coffee and toast or biscuits. You get down to the briefing room at about 6:59 and try to get a seat if there is any left. Then we fill out a clearance sheet. It gives the names of all your crew, the ship you fly that day. etc. We were flying our own ship, the “Old Crow.” They then showed us where we were going, the route in and out, etc., and told us what time we took off. Up to now its been like any other mission, but from here on out, they’re never the same. “We picked up our ’chutes, life vests, etc., and headed for the crate. After taking off we assembled in a group over the field and headed for France. Fly in Formation “We were flying in a box of six on the right side of the lead box. It’s not too good a seat to see from because most of the formation is behind you, but you can see enough. “At a fixed time over the channel, we picked up our fight er escort of RAF. Spitfires, one mighty swell fighter and no fooling. Without those we'd probably get shot by enemy fighters. This particular morning they met us right on the button, so there wasn't, any worrying on that score. As time draws near to meeting them, you’re really looking the skys over. They look an awful lot like a MF.109 and you never mak ethat mistake twice. The boys that fly them know it tho. so they’re pretty careful. “They put a cover over us at about 25,000 feet and then a bunch, of them fly much closer escort. As soon as you see them Vernonia Eagle pull in you feel just a little easier, but the coast line is right near. About that time comes the flak suit and steel helmet. That knocks hell out of the leath er jacket, white scarf and beau tiful fliyng helmet of .the movies, but its much more practical. Thé importance of Co lombia’s action to the allies and to the United States in particu lar, lies in Colombia’s long coat line, which gives it access to the approaches to the Panama Canal from two oceans.
