    GERMANS CONFISCATE
CHURCH BELLS
GET QUICK WORD
Next-of-kin of servicemen who
have been taken prisoner by the
enemy will receive swift and ac
curate notification, the office
of war information has announc
ed. The government immediately
will transmit free any accurate
information from a reliable
source dealing with prisoners of
war. OWI warned against relia
bility of enemy broadcasts and
against paying any private in
dividual or organization for such
information.
OTHER BAKERY PRODUCTS
TO BE ENRICHED
The food enrichment already
applied to white bread will be
extended to coffee cakes, sweet
buns, plain rolls, doughnuts, and
all other types of yeast-raised
commercial bakery products. Be
ginning January 16, in addition
to white bread, these products
must contain specified minimum
food values to the extent white
flour is used. The amendment
to the food order also provides
that consumers of bakery pro
ducts cannot for any reason re
turn bakery products they have
bought.
BLACK MARKET GAS
TO BE KILLED
In a new drive on gasoline
black markets, OPA has asked
distributors to “screen out” ir
regular coupons — any coupons
that are counterfeit, expired, not
yet valid, or not endorsed by the
motorist. Filling stations also will
be required to make good irregu
lar coupons, and their inventory
will be cut down by the amount
of irregular coupons passed on
to the wholesaler. Endorsement
as they receive ration books will
aid OPA in proving that black
market stations have purchased
coupons to cover up illegal sales.
EXPENDITURES OF
WAR INCREASE
U. S. War expenditures for
November went to a new high of
$7,794,000,000, an increase of
689 million dollars, or nearly 10
per cent, over October, WPB
has reported. The average daily
rates of expenditures for war
purposes was clo#e to the 300-
million-dollar mark in November.
GREATER REFRIGERATOR
QUOTA ANNOUNCED
Increased refrigerator quotas
for the first three months of
1944—40,000 more than for the
last quarter pf this year—have
been set by the war production
board. This increased production
is expected to care for the in
creased need for ice refrigerators
due to the unavailab lity of me
chanical refrigerators
In many Belgian towns relays
of volunteers guard the churches
night and day to give warning
of the impending removal of any
church bells by the Germans. In.
some places workmen who come
to remove the • church bells have
been stoned and Germans have
been obliged t-o force open bel
fry doors amid loud and angry
protests from the populations,
who gather in great demonstra
tions.

COUNTY REMEMBERS TB
PATIENTS WITH $2880
TILLAMOOK — This county
has responded as never before to
the appeal of the Christmas seal
a large percent of which remains
in the county to help in the re
covery of those stricken with
tuberculosis. Tuesday of last
week, $2880 had been contrib
uted, the largest sum for many
years. From the appearance of
the response, the sum will reach
$3000.
SIX FIRES IN WEEK MAR
RECORD; TOTAL TO TOP '42
FOREST GROVE — Six fires
recently marred the record set
by October and brought the year
total higher than last year with
nine days still to go.
PROSPECT MAN CHARGED
WITH CHILD BEATING
Because of the reduced supply
of new (1942) automobiles, el
igibility requirements for these
cars have been tightened by
OPA to reduce the number of
applicants. Under the new rule
an applicant’s present car must
have been driven 60,000 miles
(previously 40,000) ‘before it
can be considered unserviceable
by local boards, salesmen are
ineligible for new cars, and lo
cal boards are requested to is
sue a purchase permit only to
an applicant showing an immed
iate need.
MEDFORD — Earl Finton,
30, a millworker is held in jail
here under $1000 bond charged
with cruelty to a child not his
own. The child is covered with
bruises and welts from beatings
with a razor strop and an elec
tric cord.

1944 PLUS
Sure, 1944 will be more than
just so many days and weeks,
if you make it by Power from on
High. “I can do all things thru
Christ, who gives me power.”—
The Apostle Paul—Phil. 4:13.
, God Lives—Death can never
touch him nor his. God loves
and He proved it by sending
Christ >to die for your sins. God
lifts—He puts his hand un’der the
man lowest down. He lifts that
man into new hope; fills him
with cheer; becomes his strength;
becomes his over-comer.
Christ stands at the door and
knocks. Let Him in. He has New
Life for you.
—“Christ has saved and satis
fied me for 47 years. I have
often failed Him but He has
never failed me”—Gen. Dobbie,
who for months commanded
Malta, the most bombed island.
Christ SAVES — KEEPS —
SATISFIES. This is the begin
ning of all 1944 victory.
