Brady, has begun train ing at Fort Riley, Kansas. After his induction into the army, he left here August 5. SERGEANT VISITS “Sgt. B. V. Morris of the army air corps visited here last week end while on a short furlough. Chosen Vice-President Emil Messing, postmaster here, is one of the vice-presidents chos en by George B. Conyers of Clats kanie, newly-elected president of the Columbia County Pioneers as sociation. Other in the county chosen by Mr. Conyers are Dr. Edwin Ross of St. Helens, Mrs. W. A. Wood of Rainier and Peter Banzer of Mist. Visit in Longview— ' Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Grunden visited Tuesday in Longview, Washington. The young people of the Assem bly of God church gathered at the home of Mrs. Nola Brady for a shut-in service for Mrs. J. W. Rosa Sunday evening. Motor to Portland— Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Slape and family, Mrs. Lamoin Milligan, and Mr. E. G. Slape motored to Port land Monday. E. G. Slape went on from there to the navy. We cure home-sickness with “the makings” of a parcel to a soldier boy away from home at Xmas time. Rosa fnd tou t'd to Forest Grove Tuesday, bring ing Mr. Rosa's sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Haney, ba.-k with them for a few week's visit. It took nearly two years for a bottle containing a note telling of the sinking of a Jap freighter in the South Pa cific to drift to Rockaway beach—between Nehalem and Tillamook in Tillamook coun ty, and Mrs. C. D. Murray happened to be on the beach just in time to pick it up. Not long after Mr. and Mrs. Murray arrived there Thurs day noon to spend several days the bottle drifted in on the tide and she picked it up. The note read: “To whom it may concern: The steam freight Genoa Maru of Yoko hama is sinking at approxi mately Lat. 42’ 81’ 11”, ‘ Long. 120’ 0’ 58”. Dec. 4, 1941.” It was scrawled on the back of a newspaper adver tisement in pencil. The bot tle cap is slightly rusted and a little water had seeped in to the bottle.
