Vernonia Eagle Mrs. America Mists th s Wir Note: War touches every home and every citizen. This column, 'based on official government in formation and prepare^ by the office of war inform tion, shows ■how the war will affect Mrs. Amer ica and her home. Call it Salisbury steak, ground round steak or just hamburger, but OPA rationing regulations set up a definition of this popular meat item, including specifications for the retail dealer to follow. If a housewife wants to use some of her point stamps for round steak, chuck, rump or sirloin ground, she will buy these in whole • form, paying the correct number of points and then have them ground to order. But if she buys ready ground hamburg er, defined as “beef ground from necks, flanks, shanks, briskets, plates and miscellaneous beef trimmings and beef fat,” she will not be required to pay more than five points a pound. Of course, the point stamps needed to obtain meat, cheeses, canned fish, and edible fats and oils under the new rationing program, which went in to effect March 29, are the red stamps in war ration book two. No increase in points for the processed foods rationing program has been given for the new ration period. During April Mrs. Ameri ca will have 48 points to spend for her purchases of canned, froz en and dried fruits and vegetables and all soups. These points will be obtained by the blue stamps in war ration book two bearing the letters D, E, and F. Perhaps Mrs. America has made up her mind that fine linens are to be chalked up as a wartime casualty for whatever fibres are available in this country go for essential war use -first. And be sides the United States is not equipped to manufacture luxurious linens for there are practically no spindles, looms, the proper type of flax or trained labor for this type of production. If some of your precious linen possessions bear the names of occupied coun tries of France, Belgium, Austria, Czechoslovakia stamped in the sel vage, realize these are truly jel- ics. Other linen-making countries of Russia, Ireland, Switzerland, certainly cannot spare much, labor for non-essentials, and neither is there cargo space for luxuries. So obviously, handkerchief linen, dress linen, drapery and upholst ery linen, and table damask should be handled with greatest of care for a decrease in their availability is inevitable. Want something new and dif ferent for your family’s dinner? Shark steak is a suggestion of the Look! * A driver with alcohol in his sys tem doesn’t have much system about the way he does things. In the grade crossing accident illustrated here, three young men had alcohol in their systems and the three men and their systems. Including the alcohol, were in a car, one of them as the driver. At 3:20 a.m. the driver steered headon into a freight train at a grade crossing. The impact de railed an oil car and threw it into the path of a speeding passenger train coming from the opposite direction. The passenger engine was derailed, and jack-knifed the baggage car, turning over a coach and derailing five additional cars. Forty persons were injured, the three young men were killed and traffic on the mainline — a vital war goods artery — was tied up for several hours. Alcohol and gasoline don’t mix —nor does a car mix well with e speeding train. But 34 per cent cf the grade crossing accidents aro due to cars running into the side of trains, and three-fourths of these occur at night.
