Bernard Noble, Reed College, to Talk to Students, Study Club Dr. George Bernard Noble from the division of history and social science of Reed College will speak Thursday afternoon to the high school students on the subject. “The First and the Second World Wars”. In the evening as guest of the Vernonia Study Club, Dr. Noble will address members of the club and their husbands at a meeting to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Judd Greenman. “Our War Effort and the Task that Lies A- head” will be the topic. Dr. Noble, a Rhodes scholarship graduate of Oxford University, has become well-known throughout the state for his work as a lecturer, having addressed many clubs, study groups and other organizations. Through the efforts of the high sichool and Study Club Vernonia people are given the opportunity to hear the fine lecture. Defense Divisions To Practice Wed. Another practice for the civilian defense organization here is plan ned for Wednesday, May 6th, an announcement this week indicates. Four divisions of the local organiz ation will participate at that time: the Air Raid Wardens, Civilian Pol ice, Eire Department and Casualty Station. In organizing the practice, t is being ' assumed that Vernonia will be bomlbed at 7:30 that evening. The first unit of the Casualty Sta tion will report immediately for duty while the second unit wnich, in case of an actual attack would report four hours later, will report at 8:30 on that particular evening to carry on. The first unit will re main after that time for a discus sion. All ambulances are in both the first and second units. During the evening’s practice, the police department will use imagin ary bombs which will make a small report. Those reports are not to be confused with the real thing by those who hear them. Pomona Grange to Review History The Columbia County Pomona Grange will' celebrate its 40th an niversary at the Yankton Grange hall May 2 with a special program to be given at 2 o’clock, is an an nouncement made this week. All grangers and their friends are urged to come and review the history of the organization. The county grange was organized at Clatskanie in 1902. Complete plans have been made for the evacuation of our schools in the event of an air raid. A unit of fire fighters of nigh school boys has been organized under the state fire marshal.
