Seven yards of sand were hauled from Gearhart Sunday by two county trucks and were deposited at the Central Garage building lo cated next to Hoffman Hardware building on Bridge Street. To Meet Each Week Four-Day Period Allowed A motion brought before the group and adopted was that meet ings be held once each week in the future instead of the usual two weeks or once each month as was the case in the past. Rev. H. R. Scheuerman spoke to the group on the Prayer Minute which is being carried out here along with other communities in the country. The minute takes place at six o’clock and it was asked if the city fire, siren could be used to announce the time. A committee v.as appointed of Mr. Scheuerman, J. A. Bush and Ken White to inter view the city council relative to use of the siren for that purpose. The registration will' cover a period of four days, and in general, places for registratioon will Oe open from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p. m., although this may be changed should local conditions n.ake other more convenient plans. Tax Statement Queries Answered County Judge Ray Tarbell, a visi tor in Vernonia Tuesday, gave in formation that will go far towards answering any queries regarding the last statement received here by taxpayers. The queries have risen due to the size of the statements, hence the explanation given this week. Although the taxes coming due March 15th are 1942 taxes for six months ending June 30, 1942, they cannot be classed as a six-months tax as far as percentages are con cerned as they are based on an as sessment made March 1, 1941, and cover levies made by the grade school's, high schools, and the non high school board for a full year from June 30, 1941 to June 30, 1942. While the cities levied for cniy six months, the county general and the road levies are for seven months and the fire natrol tax is for a full year. It is an adjusted tax based on adjusted levies all end ing June 30th, 1942, which enables ail tax levying bodies to have the same period for levies in the future, the schools having been aix months behind the cities and the county one month behind. Under the new law all property ir assessed as of January 1st of each year and the taxes are based on combined levies alt made in June and the tax will be d'le November 15th, 1942, and is subject to a three per cent discount for full payment or payable in quarters be ginning November 15, 1942. The first authentic information regarding the much-talked rationing of sugar was received here this week and was avail able for release. The information deals with the procedure that will be followed but does not give the date or dates when mem bers of families may sign and receive rationing cards for their families. Information regarding the dates will be available at a little ter time, it is beieved. Thanks for As made known here, school ad ministrators will have charge of Response Given Residents of each school district ere to register at the school for their district. In the cases of dis tricts where elementary school child ren are transported to another school, residents will register at the school where their children are enrolled. A communication was received this week from Mrs. E. J. R. Ros- siter, whose husband lectured and brought moving pictures here for the civilian defense show a short time ago. The amount of money contributed and the disposition of the fund is explained in the letter: “Please accept our very sincere thanks on behalf of the British War Relief Society for the contributions of the people of Vernonia to the ex tent of thirty dollars for our work. Please note that we have sent twen ty dollars to our headquarters for the maintenance of hospitals and h, stels for bomb-shocked children and the balance to the Overseas league for Tobacco Fund which provides cigarettes and tobacco for men in the British services, in hos pital, and in enemy prison camps. “THANK YOU AMERICA, WE WON’T FORGET!” 8 Tons of Scrap Disposed Friday Roeser Named on All-Star Team Legion Adopts Resolution The Vernonia Legion members have gone on record with a reso lution which they believe will be beneficial to this country now that the nation is at war. The act was rdopted by the group at its meet ing last Wednesday evening. The resolution states in effect that all enemy aliens should be put in concentration camps for the du ration of the war for their pro tection and the protection of citi zens of the country. Tire Rationing Board Active Members of the local tire ration ing board, Loel Roberts, Mrs. J. C. Lincoln and Elmore Knight, met Monday evening to act on appli cations which had been received by the group. Issued so far during this month are the following truck and passenger vehicle tires and tubes and recaps: Passenger car tires, 2; Passenger car tubes, 1; recaps, 2; truck tires, 5; truck tubes, 4. The rationing board can issue one-fourth of a month's quota in any seven-day period according to the rules of rationing.
