In Oregon, about 17 per cent of the pedestrian fatality victims are under 24 years of age. Systematic safety training in the schools must be given credit for much of the improvement in child pedestrian protection, according to the state traffic safety division. —Chart courtesy Oregon State Motor Association. Child Pedestrian Fatality ToU Cut Safety instruction in schools, ac cident prevention programs carried on by the state and other organiza tions, the operation of school sarety patrols and other accident preven tion activités have cut down the child pedestrian, fatality toll to less than a fourth of pedestrian deaths in Oregon, state traffic safety divi sion officials declare. Virtually all schools in Oregon give children training in safe walk ing practices and as a result, these children know and practice safe walking habits, it was declared. Co operating in this school training program, the state department this year is sponsoring visual safety education programs in hundreds of schools, scheduling motion pictures in schools by counties. To date, two counties, Coos and Klamath have be^n covered, and arrangements have been made to cover Baker, Un ion, Malheur, Wallowa, Marion and Gilliam counties next. State department officials say Oregon is making every effort to encourage the younger generations to develop into safe walkers so that pedestrian accidents may be materially reduced in the future.
