CIVILIAN DEFENSE WEEK
The week from November 11th to Sunday, November 16th
has been set aside by presidential proclamation as Civilian De
fense Week, every day during that time being set aside for a
special phase of that work. Along with Armistice Day, the
week deserves special significance in the building of defense
for this nation. Armistice Day, Tuesday, was the day dedicated
to our country. Wednesday, November 12th, is devoted to the
war against waste now that materials are essential and should
be conserved in every way possible.
Thursday, November 13th, was the day set aside for ex
plaining the existence of the volunteer offices of the civil re
serve and for explaining the range of their activities. The
health and welfare of the population is the theme for Friday,
November 14th. The importance of a healthy and secure people
as a foundation for strong military defenses is emphasized.
A need for civilian protection will be stressed and also a
need for civilian participation in community service activities
everywhere is the theme for Saturday, November 15th. A stim
ulation of the desire of every one to volunteer for service will
also be attempted on that day.
The final day, November 16th, is the day to reaffirm our
faith in the fundamental freedom upon which this nation is
founded. It has been urged that every citizen learn how he may
fit himself into some civilian defense activity and thereby be
of service to his community.

As everyone is probably informed, Vernonia's Loggers met
Prineville on the Prineville field last Friday afternoon in a
post-season game and was defeated. The defeat was one of those
things that may be expected by any football team but the man
ner in which that defeat came about is a “pill” that is not too
easy to take and those people who have followed the Loggers in
this season’s play are having a difficult time taking that°“pill.”
